On another note, while driving my 8 year-old son to a birthday party with his friend on the weekend, his friend asked him, "What's your favorite band?" and my son replied, "Los Straitjackets". His friend replied, "I like Nine inch Nails" (NIN? Are you kidding me? did I mention he's eight?) Anyway it was a proud moment for this Pappa Surf.
I hope someday, I raise my kids as good as you.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

I had the same issue with the ex-wife, and all subsequent girlfriends. To a person, they stated that "all surf songs sound alike". Oh, well. None of the girlfriends liked the music very much, which is a major factor as to why they are now ex-girlfriends. So, a couple of years ago I got a dog who, as it turns out, really does enjoy surf music!...ask mom-surfing and eddiekatcher. When I crank up a guitar or bass, he grabs one of his squeaky toys and plays along with me.
I will say that being single for the past several years has also allowed me to acquire some really cool gear that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. Being single is way better than being married to the wrong woman. And a lot less expensive!
I remember having to sneak my first Strat into the house back in the mid-'70's, and keeping it hidden for over a year due to fear of spousal wrath and reprisal. When I did finally get it out of the case and play it, I was able to say, truthfully, "Oh, I've had this one a long time!"

At my house, the hubby is a sort of trad nazi while I love it all, first, second and third/fourth wave.
I can only play one "modern" surf CD in the car (with the exception of Meshugga Beach Party - they're great in his book) and then it's back to trad surf or instro's or 60's garage.
I'm not complaining......

My kids like Man or Astroman? My son is 8, and my daughter is 4 we were listening to Project infinity in the car, when Manta Ray came on, she said this is the same as Jimmy Neutron, having no idea, Starcrunch did the Jimmy Neutron theme. Now that they have the Jimmy neutron connection, they really love MOAM? My son even swiped my Deluxe Men in Space disc, And informed me to just buy another one for myself!!
Kind of off the origional topic, Sorry!

I can't imagine choosing to spend your life with someone who doesn't share your tastes and interests.
I agree. I mean it depends on how important the interests are in your life. But it seems like it might be a big deal if they don't like a significant amount of your music collection, IMO. What do I know, I'm 22.

I, too, have been blessed with girl-friends that have totally dug the surf-beat groove!
For that I am most grateful!

My wife and daughter love surf music. My three year old daughter hums tunes from Eddie Angel's Guitar Party, and several Satan's Pilgrims songs

I was joking earlier about my wife.... Actually, I am pretty lucky. While she's not a big fan of surf music in general, she is a big supporter of my interest in it, my band, and my music gear acquisitions.
I notice a lot of other guys say their wife's also support the gear addictions. Have any of you had this come back to bite you in the ass like it has me??? This usually seems to happen at the furniture store, the appliance store, jewelry store, etc.

My wife digs a lot of the surf I've exposed her to, especially Laika and The Cosmonauts, Los Twang Marvels, Satan's Pilgrims (especially their version of The Godfather Theme!). She had a Man or Astroman? CD in her collection before we met.
Not bad for a Leonard Cohen fanatic

my Daughter thinks all surf 'sounds the same'
but she does like ITCHY CHICKEN by Los Straitjackets
and when I visited her at College in October (she is a Soph), I had the LAIKA/COSMONAUTS 'Cosmopolous' collection with me, and she kind of liked it, b/c, as she said, it 'sounds different from the other stuff'

Ha...you have one of those too?
Yeah, she even has his books (well, because I bought them for her )
On the blues angle, my wife had Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Wolf and Muddy discs/lps before I met her. But what sealed the deal was her copy of Miles' Kind of Blue

I could never figure out why somebody would be with someone who doesn't like the music they do, and/or expect them to want to buy gear.
another thing that gets me is..
My buddy Marty always gets shit for when he wants to go out to a show.
His wife thinks that hes out flirting with chicks at the bars.
I told her this is surf music, there is no chicks at shows.

I must confess, I'm pretty lucky. My wife is a big fan & supporter of surf music and actually encourages me to buy good gear. However, for payback I'm taking her to a Doobie Brothers concert Tuesday night. Urrrggghh. (pray for me.)

Just in case my wife reads this I want to point out that although she is not the biggest fan of "that twanging", she does dig the forementioned (Zak, please skip this next part) Rock en Espanole by LSJ and she thinks some of the other stuff is ok, but any tunes that have lots of tremelo picking get the "skip" button in the car.
UnteadyFreddie, my kids too love the itchy chicken. I have to say one of the best things about surf music is that words don't get in the way. The songs aren't conservative or liberal, muslim or christian, black or white, R rated or G rated, the surf doesn't know what shore it's lapping up on.
By the way I also give the LSJs a lot of credit for doing all ages shows and bringing watered-down pastuerized wonder bread surf music to the masses (there had to be something in this post for Zak).

Ok, maybe I used the word "masses" a bit liberally, but isn't any publicity good publicity? So someone comes to surf music via LSJ and discovers there is so much more, isn't that good?
Same parallel for spouses.
