in the past we've tried selling a little bit of the music, but i've found it hard to sell unless it's actually playing and someone inquires about it. we've also got a space problem.........so now if someone inquires i send them to the bands website. on another note, they are holding the eastern surfing championships here this week. i went down to the beach yesterday to watch a bit of the contest and over the PA they were playing some hendrix, which is ok, but it would have been way cooler to hear some surf instrumentals. i'll have to work on the contest director about the music choice for next years event. carol — |

It's pretty cool when an unexpected surf song pops up. For whatever reason I've heard "Bikini Drag" in two different used bookstores, one of which is right next to Pepperland Records, where I think some of the Golly Gee surf bands have played before. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

She also lugs around boxes of surf music CDs and regularly sells quite a bit of merch. I understand the lack of space though... Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |

There is little association with surf music & surfing here in Surf City. During the surf contests its heavy metal had banging stuff. Go in any surf shop here & it's grunge garage punk BS playing. When they inducted big wave surfing legend Greg Knoll into the surf hall of fame here I have no ideal what they were playing. It want surf that was for sure. The last time I remember surf music being played in a surf shop here was about 15 years ago some place had the Sandals Endless Summer CD playing & I bought it. |

Hey Mom Surfing, If I send you a CD would you play it in your store once in a while?
What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras? |

Hey Mom Surfing (aka Carol), In regard to an earlier comment: Wouldn't it be way cooler to have a live band play surf rock on the beach during a surf contest. Hey, I think that happened already last Sunday in Manasquan, NJ!!!
PS: We have a few pics on the website from last Sunday. Its hard to play and take pics so I gave the camera to a friend and all he did was take photos of the bikinis. www.theFinDicators.com —What day is Surf Rock's birthday? answer to dp........yes having a live surf band(s) at this surf contest would be cool BUT it is being held on national seashore property and the park service does not allow anything other than the contest to happen at the beach. the sponsers are not allowed to put their banners up at the beach, so right now they are tied all over the railings on our deck. the eastern surfing association who is hosting the event isn't even allowed to sell their t shirts at the beach so we've got someone on our grounds selling the shirts. and, the SOBE bus is here to give away free product and they aren't even allowed to park their bus in the parking lot at the beach because it is one big advertisement. the SOBE bus is now parked on our yard next to our shop. i would love to get some kind of event together here on the outer banks but there are so many restrictions and then there is also the weather factor. usually this is a beautiful place to be but we are also a hurricane magnet and the thought of planning a big event and having it ruined by the weather makes planning tough. (for example, the beach boys played here during the 100 years of flight anniversary a few years ago up in nags head/kitty hawk on an outdoor stage and it was 35* out with howling winds. the drummer was wearing a big puffy jacket to stay warm. i have no idea how the guitar player could even move his fingers!!) sorry for wandering off topic a bit — |

A little more off topic, but back on too ... Too bad about all those restrictions at Hatteras. When I was there my wife and I stopped by one of the roadside pools to feed the terrapins catfood. They were really cool the way they climbed on top of each other just like the sliders I have at home. The next day there was a big NO sign and cited some regulation. I'm sorry we ruined it for you down there. I see on Surfline the contest festivities was kicked-off with a punk band. I gave CDs to all the surf shops within and easy drive. Some where like "Cool, I'll put this in now" and they did. Others gave me the non-local stink-eye and I can hear the CD hitting the garbage can even before I leave the store. I was about to buy some stuff too. It seems that reggae-dub is the poison of choice amongst surfing-types here in NJ. Besides, I am older (44) and don't have a "core" look to me even though I have pretty close to a surfers build. I did get a lot of surf-related hits on my website from the whole "play the beach" thing.

i know the turtle pond you 'violated'. the sign comes and goes and people still stop to feed them. the punk band that played for the contest is some of my sons 15 year old friends. i have taught them a few surf instrumentals which they have punkified, but at least they are playing them because they think they are cool. if you're ever here and want to drop off a cd it will be played in the shop, not tossed in the trash. — |

it happened again today as i was playing the fathoms 'fathomless' in the shop, a fisherman in with his two sons asked me what kind of music i was playing because he'd never heard it before and he really liked it. — |

I'd almost forgotten about this thread, but now that it's "back at the top", I thought I'd add: Rodd, the Lava Rat bassist, works in a small restaurant/microbrewery in the Sunset district in SF, and while serving food and drinks, he often serves up the music for the house. Recently, he's been putting lots of surf music in the mix, and getting RAVE reviews for it. He says in particular that Pollo Del Mar, Daikaiju, and the "Charlie Does Surf" compilations have all gotten high marks. I will also add on a side note that he has yet to play the 'Rats (damn traitor). But it's promising to hear that people who don't necessarily have anything to do with "surf culture" or even "beach culture" are into what they hear. ~B~ |

Yeah... I really think that part of it is that Rodd says he'd get distracted, because he thinks so much about what the bass is doing on that CD. As for our new disc... we hope to start recording in probably January. With Taylor getting married next weekend, practices are a teeny bit sporadic these days. ~B~ |

I've always believed that surf music has suffered because of underexposure, not music quality. My friends are always surprised what I listen to because I guess I really try not to have the media tell me what to like. I think this same problem is faced, although not as bad, by jazz musicians and classical music (at least here in the midwest). People seem to feel empowered to be part of a group and tend to ignore something that they can't relate with to other people. If somehow most people could be exposed to it, I'm very sure it would become popular. Every Straitjackets show I come to (deck out in my mask) people look at me like I'm some sort of weirdo. After the show they think the whole night was great and then I have to tell them I'm not with the band, but only a fan. I think there's something in the surf genre for probably over half the country. I always thought it was a mix of rock, punk, country, and even a little classical. I think the Baronics were a band that exclusively did the latter, and I think Hungarian Rapsody was done a few times. I always wonder what the 1812 overture would sound like played at double time with a lot of reverb and stacatto done to it. I mean, isn't there similar sonic qualities to the surf guitar and the harpsicord? |
