I think easy to assume that most American's know him more by his rather unique looks rather than his music. Now not to say he's not a great guitar player.I'm surprised that photo didn't ring your bell.

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Wow....I never would have guessed and I'm a huge Johnny Winter fan.
Where did you find that tune? When was it recorded?

Living north of the 49th, that's the first photo I seen of Johnny although I do recognize the name as I said.

I've never been much of a TV watcher (haven't had cable or satellite for the last 14 years; too many other things to do), and about the only time I listened to radio it was when we had an active band in the 60's.

Later on in the 70's and 80's local stations didn't really play much of what I wanted to listen to, so I listened to "oldies" stations out of Seattle when I could pick them up or traffic reports for my work commute...course my kids made sure I heard other music while they were going up..;-)

Which means about 80% of the covers of magazines like Guitar Player have photos of bands or people I couldn't recognize (or never heard of for that matter).

...... would be considered a "household name" even by mainstream standards

Now that's what threw me ... he certainly wouldn't be considered a household name in the UK - let alone 'mainstream'. I can't think of anyone in my family who would have heard of him apart from me. You'd have to be rock/blues fan of a certain age.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

Rock n Roll Hootchie Coo!
He must have reached his peak of fame with Johnny Winter And...his band with Rick Derringer. They put out a popular live album in the early 70s that I can barely remember, but after that I ended up singing Jumping Jack Flash like him.

My big brother brought home "Still Alive and Well" in 1973 and to my twelve year old ears it was one of the most insane things I had ever heard! I ended up wearing it out on my GE Wildcat record player and I had to buy him a new copy. Needless to say I was soon saving my money for a guitar.

Still some of the most over-the-top guitar work ever recorded:

Ha, never heard of him.

Surfabilly
A bunch of web sites that are more concerned with glitz and glitter, trying to sell folks something, than folks actually being able to share something?

That's a really interesting way of saying you don't actually have a clue who that tune is by. Laughing Or is that an attempt to admit that you can't figure out how to download the file? Laughing

Would "too lazy to keep clicking" work?

Matt

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

I saw Winter at the first Atlanta Pop Festival in July of 1969. I think he was playing into 4 or 6 Twin Reverbs. Very loud!

I started listening to JW after hearing him on the Edgar Winter's White Trash Roadwork album. I saw him live at The Hammersmith Odeon in '92 and it was sold out, definitely to an older crowd.

I don't think many of my friends would know him here either, and definitely not a household name; but as a pimply faced wide-eyed teenager I borrowed a few of his albums from the local library, so knew of him. I vaguely remember a live album? Tell me, did he sing too (growl) - or am I thinking of someone else?

'growl' is one way of putting it. one hell of a guitar player in that texas blues vein and i'm sure back in the day quite a stage presence with that white hair/white skin.

Well, mom surfing - I guess I've got the right man - that's him! Great player.

Cool find Zak! My fav JW stuff is his Self Titled album. That is some of the rawest, sickest electric blues guitar of all time IMHO. His acoustic blues on that album (especially Dallas) is equally powerful. Great voice as well.

Estreet,
You're probably thinking of Johnny Winter And--with Rick Derringer, recorded live at Pirates World in Dania Florida. I was there that night.

I was just gonna bring that show up, I was there also....I think

Surfer,
Saw him again a few years later at the Sportatorium. He was much more bluesy. He stalked around the stage with that Firebird like some sort of crazed stork.
