Permalink Songs you Wish you Wrote

Cool So the title to this thread is pretty self explanatory. What are some Surf, Instro, Fuzz, ect.... songs that you like so much, that you wish you would have written? Very Happy For example a song that I really love is "The Jester" by Jim Messina and his Jesters. When I first heard this song my first thought was Shocked "Holy fucking Shit, this song is badass!!!". To me this song is a good example of a great surf song and band. This song is simple yet very Cool, not to mention the drums kick ass in this song. Cool There's more songs that I really like, but I thought I'd start this thread of with this one Razz

The Deadbeats

Bells of St. Kahuna by Slacktone.

Bo Diddley by Bo Diddley.

But I don't think it would be half as good if I wrote it..

"Nicholas Appleby Nicholas Appleby have ya heard.." doesn't quite roll of the tongue!

The Pacifics - The Big Beat from Dublin

Evil Sons - Wild Two-Piece Trash

I wish I wrote "You lost that luvin' feelin', the most played song on radio. Also wish I'd written a bunch of the Beatles & Eagles stuff and in surf, Wipeout. I'd be a rich mo fo with a mansion on the beach in Maui & a private jet among other things. I'd fly all my bros over & we would have the most epic Big Kahuna surf jam ever.

On the surf side of things: Jewel of Duende or Escape from Gulag 17 by the Space Cossacks. Hawaii Joe by Bambi Molesters although I probably wouldn't let it on an album I made. I would just play that riff forever. Awesome.

non-surf: Hard Way to Fall by Ryan Adams, Isis by Bob Dylan, Veronica by Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney, I'm Looking Through You by the Beatles, or I'll Follow the Sun, or I've Just Seen a Face.

Classical- Pachebel(otherwise a crummy composer): Canon in D, Bach: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Wanderer's Awake(Wachet Auf something or other), Reqeium, Vivaldi: In Mundo Pax, Beethoven: the 9th(most brilliant thing ever written although not my favorite) Mozart: KV588? Quartet for Woodwinds

I would LOVE to be able to take credit for writing:

Baja
Movin'
Mr Moto
Pipeline
Lamento-a-go-go

But since I can't, I'll have to settle for:

Nichol Beer
Durango Beach
Rippin'
Paddle or Die
Sneak Attack
Injector
Theme from a Western Omelet
Deflector Shield
Sneak Attack
One if by Land (Two if by Surf)
Horizon Line
Shuttle Bunny
Patton's Run
Dance of the Shark
Pompas Surfin' Stance
Hot Spanish Noodles
Moon Shoot
Gargoyles
Second Helping
How the West was Surfed
Boofin' (Pineapple)
The Last Drop
Table Saw
Tybee Island Sunset
M.O.T.Sa!
and others....................

Whew!

Eddie K's pick for the all time best surf tunes:

Pipeline
Baja
Movin'
Mr Moto
Lamento-a-go-go

ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

N.Y. 79 and Global Village by Laika & the Cosmonauts

Red Sunrise by the Space Cossacks

And what the hell, being credited with Telstar would be righteous.

Science friction burns my fingers.

Jake, I'm right there with you on Jewel of Duende. Incredible tune...

Lover's Lane and Far East Fling by The Huntington Cads
Everybody Up by The Fender IV
Corazon Loco by Los Twang! Marvels

...and way too many more to list..

Ryan,

Some Girls are Bigger than Others?

And in all seriousness I wish to add "There is a Light That Will Never Go Out" to the list. String arrangement is amazing, and then there are Morrissey's best lyrics.

Smile The Nebulas "Cosmos 954", Satan's Pilgrims "Boss BSA", and "Slaughter on 10th Ave.", even though its not a ventures tune. Razz And for non Surf instro related songs here goes, Dave Brubeck Quartet "Koto Song" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ohyd0EDVKA Also the "Super Mario Theme" because I would have made Million$ Laughing Razz "Let's Play House" Elvis Presley, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI97stLQLdw Razz Yes, because it kicks ass, and its my favorite tune that he performed Very Happy

The Deadbeats

Well, if we're going there then I'd definitely have to pick Asleep and I Know its Over.

We are going there. Technically surf songs aren't even songs since songs must include words for it to be considered a song. If it were musical pieces then we might be in trouble non-surf wise.

You know, I think I'd settle for just having done a nice arrangement or adaptation of something. The surf version of Yankee Doodle or whatever. Sad

It's a pretty eclectic mix, but I really envy the songwriting prowess behind all those songs. Worship

I would not mind collecting Royalties from "Hawai Five-O." Mr. Green
