Permalink 8" guitar speaker cab OPEN OR CLOSED?

New Topic

Hey surfers anyone one had experience with an 8" guitar speaker cabinet? I was thinking of purchasing one for my Vox style 7 watt guitar amp head and was wondering if a closed or open back 8" speaker cabinet would sound better. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

It would make sense that a closed cab would give you more bottom end, which would be handy with an "8 (how much would probably depend on how well the cab is suited to the speaker), but I haven't used one myself so I can't say for sure.

I use a few small Amps in the Studio. Two are 1x"8 open backs, one is a 2x6" open back, & one is a 1x10" closed back. All of the open backs work great for recording, whereas the closed back 10" can get a little woofy if I don't use the right sort of mic. Hope that helps a bit.

Ya can't have too much woof for surf.............. I dig that tubby, thunky big fat sound of a closed back speaker........ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

My aching shoulder would love a 2x8 closed back cab for practice or small gigs. It would be like carrying a boombox to the gig.
Great idea!

The Amp I have with 2x6" speakers in it is an old Teisco from the early '60s. I've often toyed with the idea of putting 2x8" speakers in it; I've measured it up & they will fit in there - just!!

I reckon it would thump out quite nicely. Twisted Evil

A 2x6 or 2x8 cabinet would be perfect for one of these little amps built into a miniature Showman head. I've been thinking about building a kit anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll go with the open back. The Weber speaker I have already has plenty of bottom end on it's own.
