Wow, sorry just specifying, if this wasn't SG101, I would've gone to more detail, BTW, it's Freshman, not 7th Grader.

About 12 years ago, I severed the extensor tendon in my right index finger: I couldn't straighten my finger and point anymore! Anyway, a hand Dr. did surgery and hooked me back together. After I healed, had to do finger exercises in order to reduce the stiffness. Eventually, things went back to normal, but I still have a gnarly scar on that finger. (ps: the lesson learned from this incident? PULL the socket wrench towards you....never EVER EVER PUSH it away from you with a closed grip...you will surely slip and find the jagged sheet metal edge of your Econoline's engine compartment!) |

Back in July 1997, I stepped off-balance in the kitchen, and as I put my arms out to help re-steady myself, my left hand crashed into the corner of a cabinet. Long story short, from here, I severed the nerves that run alongside the 5th metacarpal (bone between the wrist and pinky finger). This was at a time when I was looking to take lessons/learn chords, but a neuropathy developed where the severed nerves grew back together, and my left pinky finger isn't any good for fretting on guitar or bass. I still need to put up my poster of standard tuning chords, and figure out which ones I can do without the pinky involved. Otherwise, my playing style is somewhat of a cross between Django Reinhart and Keith Richards. It always amazes me at what I can learn to play, without even making barre chords in some instances, even if I have to travel up and down the neck a bit more for some things. I once thought about smacking my hand with a ball peen hammer so I'd have an excuse for my bad playing... |

I got lucky I guess. I cut my left pinky finger to the bone on a piece of tin that I was trying to bend without adequate gloves. After I got sewn up it took several months for me to be able to straighten it and regain full usage but I did. It's still tingly after 3 years. The worst part was that I sold my first G&L Legacy ,not expecting to recover. |

No need to pray for me because I am not religious by any means. Sounds like some of you have had some really bad injuries, far worse than mine. |

If I haven't missed the boat on this thread (damn this time zone difference!), here's my two cents' worth. Once when I was making wedge shims for a rear axle swap, I cut through my left index finger with a hacksaw. Not all the way, although I thought it was gone at first because there was so much blood everywhere. Later, I broke my right pinky behind the knuckle in a boxing mishap. The doctor put a splint on it and said to come back in three weeks. When I did, he found the fracture (actually a complete snap) had already healed back together, in the wrong position. This meant breaking the bone again. Medieval as it sounds, one doctor held my shoulders from behind while the other tied a length of gauze around the finger and yanked on it until it snapped. After a few months, I was able to close the hand properly again. This stuff happened before I ever picked up a guitar, but the relevance to injured fellow SG101ers is that -- as much as I'd like to blame my guitar playing on some kind of disability -- there hasn't been any long-term impairment from either injury. Take care, and good luck with the healing process. |

Oww, I just smashed my hand on the edge of a whiteboard my dad has, it's going to be fine, I hope, but it's numb, and I feel heat coursing through it. I also was kicked in the fingers by accident, and it smashed my thumb in, and it got better, but I couldn't feel it for a while. I have trouble gripping things, it's gone away, but not completely, it's been two weeks, so I'm kind of confused. —

Perhaps a poll to determine how long it will take you to recover will help. |
