I’m just getting into surf (my DiPinto Los Straitjackets Galaxie 4 should be here any day)...I am not overly burdened with excess spending money, so I ask...what are the essential CDs I should get?

I already have Rock Instrumentals Vol. 5 , the Best of Dick Dale, the live Los Straitjackets album, and the Ventures Greatest Hits.

Check out these threads:

I would add Ventures Live in Japan (1965) as a must have; plus some v/a compilations - Toes on the Nose comes to mind (Superstocks, Eddie & the Showmen, etc.). Also the Sundazed Lost... series 1-4.

For modern stuff, there are plenty of bands to recommend, but maybe start with some v/a comps - Rock Don't Run Vol 1-3 on Spinout are good. Also the Continental Magazine with CD sampler is a very inexpensive way to get a hold of some good music.

good luck

if $$$ is an object, i'd suggest this too as start. great overview. focus on 1st and second wave stuff: as for newer bands, make some comps with the multitude of legal downloads you can get obands' sites and myspace pages. that way you get a grip on both for least investment..

I'd suggest taking some of the names mentioned in other forums and reading Phil Dirt's reviews at
www.reverbcentral.com and see which albums stand out at you. That always helped me when I was first getting into surf. (I don't mean just accept his golden word, but his reviews are thorough enough that you can usually get a sense of what you're in for without having listened yet.) And you can just sift through his four and five star categories and see what else stands out for you personally.

There is a lot of great modern stuff out there...and it is really a matter of personal preference.

When people have asked me, this is exactly what I have advised them to do. When you subscribe to The Continental magazine from Double Crown Records*, each issue comes with a CD sampler of 20-25 songs from different bands that you can choose your favorites from. You can then purchase the stuff you like rather than rolling the dice.

*Note: Jet Sterling is not affiliated with Double Crown Records...he is just a monster that was created, in part, by Double Crown CD samplers (oh yeah, and tequila).

Agreeing again with the Continental. Not only is the sampler always amazing, but the reviews in the Continental seem pretty and cover a whole lot of bands, only a handful on Double Crown

Get everything Jim said. For first wave comps, I'd also add "Diggin' Out" (available through Crypt Records' mailorder) and, if you can find a copy that's less than $25, Guitar Player's "Legends of Guitar: Surf."

For second and third wave, both Jon & the Nightriders' "Raw & Alive '98" and Satan's Pilgrims' "Creature Feature" are worth paying pretty much any price for ... even your soul. Twisted Evil

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

You're also fortunate, in this age of technology and instant communication, if you find a few bands (modern ones at least) whose stuff you like, you have a lot options to contact them through their sites, myspace, or even this message board.

Yeah, bands like the Lava Rats!

Just subscribed to the "Continental"! I wonder if it comes with backrubs?

You'd think so.

Jon
Yeah, bands like the Lava Rats!

Yeah, but I wouldn't listen to them, they spend as much time on their "Journey Cover Band" side project and surf instrumental covers of old Hall and Oates songs as they do really rocking.
