Well, DiPinto apparently has a good rep. Eastwoods are pretty cool. Gretsch's are always a classic! Personally, I prefer to use a Telecaster —Mr. Mogwai |

DiPinto doesn't have a very good rep. Some people like them, most find them to be no so great. Grestch, Gibsons with P-90s, Teles are so-so for surf, Various Silvertones. I'm sure some Guilds would be fantastic. |

Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker and Gibson Les Paul Faded Double Cut, along with a Fender Bass VI for me. I also own an MIM Fender Stratocaster, and Fender So Cal Speed Shop Strat. Although the So Cal Speed Shop Strat has a humbucker (the only pickup on it, at the bridge), it's tuned C - C, which when paired with the Bass VI gives me some extra creative room, when trying to piece together various jams into one instrumental tune. Those look familiar from some of the Surf Coasters' images. Ah - Sharkman video ca 2004, I think. Difficult to spot on the Yamaha web site, but I found something like them, listed under "E Series". Appears to be part of a guitar and amp starter package deal. —I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing. |

The EGVs are new(er) - same body shape, different pickup configuration. SGVs pop up on eBay somewhat frequently, and I think Yamaha still sells a bunch of different variants in Japan. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

IMHO, the best Surf guitar is the guitar you play the best Surf music upon. I don't mean that to be double-talk, I just think that the answer is going to be different for everyone. Obviously there are guitars that are well suited to the task but you can get some amazing Surf sounds out of guitars that aren't usually thought of as surf machines. The last band I went to hear played a lot of instrumental Rock, Surf and otherwise. There were two guitarists and both of them played a bit of lead. One guitarist had a Gretsch White Falcon and the other had a Gibson ES-335. Both of them sounded fine. Never once did I think that the Surf tunes sounded bad when played on hollow/semi-hollow guitars. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. Nothing will do but offset Fenders and a backline of piggyback amps this is a big thing for me when I see live surf bands or see pics on the band sites, cd liner notes and see if they use Jags and Jazz yeah sure other guitars like Mosrites, Mustangs, Teles, Strats are fine and dandy but the original soul, sound and twang of surf is the Jazzmaster & Jaguar yeah I guess you can call me a purist (or "traditionalist") -Kyle Beyond The Surf YouTube channel |

Kyle: I agree in principle regarding the Jaguar/Jazzmaster nexus. But there has been a ton of great surf music done with a Stratocaster. Don't really like playing them myself; I am a card-carrying Stratophobe. But I am always really surprised when I find that a really killer song or guitar part was done on a Strat. I almost don't want to believe it. This has happened a lot. — |

No one ever mentions Burns. I picked one up recently, it has more bells and whistles. Really the tone shaping is endless, looks cool, plays real well, worst I can say is the wammy is pretty stiff. — |

U should seriously give the IBANEZ TALMAN series a look. Some models have the old jazz master look to them, but with 3 sweet "lipstick" style pickups. |
