Permalink Bow"s Surfy Bear Reverb/Fuzz Project

New Topic

Instead of polluting the Surfy Bear Reverb thread with my project, I figure I should start my own thread about my build.

My idea started by my want for a spring reverb, and after I found the Surfy Bear FET project, I decided I couldn't roll my own Tube Clone for anywhere close to that price, so I ordered one up, and a MOD 4AB3C1B Reverb Tank to go with it.

I had a BME StumbleBee, which is my modified Silicon version on the Mosrite Fuzzrite circuit from the M-500 Amplifier, that I had built point-to-point style on an Eyelet Board. my original plan was to install in one of the homebrewed tube amps, but I hadn't done it yet... so...

I started getting ideas of a "Spaghetti Western" tone in a single box... but then as I started watching the old European Westerns, listening to the soundtracks, and reading the great threads on this forum about that genre, I figured out that the Fuzz/Reverb "Spaghetti Western" Tone is a bit of an Urban Myth, and more of a modern version of that sound... but I decided to press on with the project.

I don't want to repost the pics here, so allow my to add a couple links to the original thread

The Surfy Bear and the StumbleBee were mounted in a common enclosure, and wired up:

Each has and Input and Output Jack and a jumper cable in between... Why you may ask? poor man's effects loop... in case I want to throw a Tremolo in the mix...

The Basic cabinet I made out is 1x8 pine:

As of now, it has been tested and sounds great, however, it still looks like a science project, so I am currently tearing it apart to paint the circuit enclosure, and finish the Cabinet...

So with the cabinet empty, and teh circuit enclosure/reverb tank removed, the next phase starts...

The plan is to try my hand at wood burning; never done it before, but I love the look... So I went digging around the 'net and found some silhouette pictures to get some ideas from.

Tonight, I transferred my design onto some scrap wood to give it a go...

Tomorrow evening I plan to start burning... these will be solid silhouettes... anyone else think the basic design of the figures tells the tale?

So an Update on the project...

So as not to bake my newly built 1x8 pine cabinet in such a way that would scar me for life, I decided to grab a piece of 1x8 Pine Scrap to give this woodburning idea a go on...

With a 25W Weller Woodburning iron kit from Lowe's, a pencil, and few morals... I started with an outline, and filled in the blanks...

I did one of the gunfighters the first night

And worked on the rest of it the Second evening:

Time to start on the real Cabinet

Nicely done! I like the way you took out that knot. Please keep posting pics to completion.

Thanks!

The Knot looked like a great place for the setting Sun...

My Wife is saying when I do the actual cabinet, I should give one of them a different hat...

Ppppfff! Fashion Critics!

Looking good.

Thanks for the comments Gents.

Last night, I started on the actual Reverb Cabinet... Here is how it looks currently:

As my wife suggested, I changed up the other gunfighter a little...

Also I was told the dude hanging from the tree was a tad Morbid, so I changed that up as well...

I love creativity! Smile Tell us more about the Stumblebee you made.

It is a silicon version of the Fuzzrite from the Mosrite M-500/M-1000 amplifiers. It is slightly different from the pedal of the Fuzzrite. I tweaked it to taste and it does Fuzzrite in spades.

Just an update to my project...

I have the wood burning complete on the front panel.

Then work got in the way as well as some vehicle troubleshooting that has turned into a transmission rebuild....

I will finish it... please stay tuned for further updates

Well, it is done.... For now....

Only thing left is to find so groovy way to label the controls and jacks

And it sounds absolutely outstanding! Dead Thread

Wow

Thats an awesome build, I am impressed by the artwork!

Love that build and the artwork, might have to make one shaped like a mini coffin out of pine, LOL.

Thanks gents!
The art was done with wood burning...

I built the Box out of pine... ;)
