On the beginning of Tranquilizer, Dave said he was watching as his saddle was sinking lower and lower to the level of the fretboard. At least it was on the last song! The night was also made exciting by the soundman knocking over John's Showman before we played, breaking the power cord, causing sparks to shoot out the back. Good times, as usual! —http://www.satanspilgrims.com |

Wow! Fantastic! Love the audience clapping during Chi-Chi, they seemed really into it! Great job, guys, and thanks for the videos, John! —Ivan |

Great videos, I wish I could go to every Satan's Pilgrims show. Ted, just keeping it so solid. Awesome. IvanP wrote:

Thanks for all the kind words, folks, and thanks to Satan's Pilgrims for their kind tolerance of my activities. So, my question is, is the "Spanish/Soul clapping" thing with Chi Chi a tradition? I'm really a total newbie as far as the Pilgrims live experience is concerned. And really I don't know that much about the band. That is, I've had CDs for quite a while, but I don't have anything like 20 years of Pilgrim history to fall back on. I never heard them live or dreamed it would even be possible until the Big Tiki Dude worked it out for them to play Surf Guitar 101. That experience kind of made me an addict - a Satan head, I guess. Maybe a hajji? Whatever you call a compulsive Pilgrimizer. As far as the clapping, Ted kind of presented it as a "new experience" when he set it up in Portland, but I've been wondering if he's just a nice guy making the Tiki Kon folks feel loved. I'd imagine Portland would be a place where they know Pilgrims, but I did see someone enthusing about "capes and everything," so who knows. Presumably not everybody there was from the area, and it's been a few years since regular shows there. Sorry about the angle on the videos. I was too close for optimal shooting, but at a Pilgrims show you have to grab a spot and hold onto it. You can't wander where you will, even if you could do it without getting in everyone else's line of sight. And I'm short, too, so it has to be a spot where tall people can't casually stroll up after I'm stationed and stand in front of me. I've had that happen at other shows for other bands, and though I've thought about beating these people to death with the camera at the time it always seems counter productive on balance. (I did once come very close to gently resting my camera on the head of a photographer who did it very blatantly.) But after all, the show is for the people actually there, not for random camera geeks or for people who might like to see amateur video or even professional photography later. We have to get in line, so to speak. So I did, and I tried to capitalize on the location to make lemonade and show the guitarists hands a lot. I'm on the wrong side for you to see much of the fretboards, but you can get the idea of how things are parceled out, and you don't really need to see the fretting anyway, right! Or probably how the parts go either ... |

The Pilgrims rule. I call them "the surf band's surf band". By that I mean everyone loves them across the board. Great guys and great players. I never grow tired of them. Wish they toured more so I could see them more. Chi Chi is truly one of my favorite's from them, but so many great ones. Not sure what the band had in mind when they wrote it but the clapping is definitely Flamenco. Such a beautiful melody. It actually makes my eyes water. Okay enough gushing. Aw shucks guys! First of all, thanks to Tiki Kon and everyone that came to the show, especially John, who traveled from CO and shoots such good videos. John, the clapping on Chi Chi is not a thing (until now). That video you shot was the first live performance of it since 1999 (see Dave playing a different melody on the first verse until it comes back to him). AND it was the first time I thought of trying to get the audience to do it, since I think it's a big part of the original recording. http://www.satanspilgrims.com Last edited: Jul 21, 2014 23:20:27 |

OK, one more for the Pilgrims fans: San Onofre. They did this one in October for the 20th Reunion at the Crystal Palace, too. Last edited: Jul 31, 2014 02:49:32 |

I really enjoyed seeing the Pilgrims at Tiki Kon...and I was especially surprised to hear them play Chi Chi (one of my top 5 favorite SP tunes) at the show!!! I think the sound on the video is actually better than what I was hearing from my seat at the show (mid-way back in the room...too much bass there). The band sounded great! — |

Ted mentioned to me that these days they are trying to include some of the older pieces that they haven't played in a while. They have been doing a nice job of it, too. (So. I wonder about Tears & Gears ....) The bass setup at the show was one of those substage things that puffs your clothing (and everything under it) a bit with each note. I think it was the same at the Crystal Palace last year. This works great for disco groups, but kind of overpowers the low end of a surf band. What I think is that I was so close that my mic, which is a mini shotgun thing, may have missed the sound from this source. The camera was above the level of the stage. Also, the camera I have, a now ancient Sony model in the "pro-am" range, uses a sound damping algorithm that tends to drop out bass and over-emphasize cymbals. I like the results, but it isn't professional sound in any sense, and not much like the experience of being there. Anyway, though I'm sure the sound was better, close up, than what I recorded, I remember it was still definitely bassy. |
