Being on a budget (is zero a budget?) it will be a while before I'll be in the market for a reverb tank or a new amp with on-board reverb. So, are there any favorite reverb pedals, stomp boxes, etc. that seem to do a good or at least adequate job that you would recommend?
Thanks,
Dave

The BOSS FRV-1 pedal seems to be the consensus, but not unanimous, choice.

I think the cheapest option would the Behringer RV600 Reverb Machine, a plastic-enclosure clone of the Line 6 Verbzilla. It does drip on the 2 spring settings, and it's quite versatile (it even has an echo mode), but it's not really on par with the Boss FRV-1 in my opinion.
If you're handy with a soldering iron you could get a Danelectro Spring King and try DeadRanchHands's mods. I think it sounds pretty awesome with a bigger reverb pan - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-VNbo0ayzs&feature=plcp
You can hear a few other pedals being compared here.

whelp.. i've been playing since the 70s. when the effects wave REALLY hit in the 80s, i could never afford the good stuff, could never dial in what i was hearing in my head, couldn't afford batteries, never had patch cords...
I even have BOSS DD7 i never plugged in.
HOWEVER.. i just bought the BOSS/Fender FRV-1 from a member here. it's amazing.
What i like about it? well it's labeled in standard terms, none of this milliseconds of delay, and other stuff. ( sure i know.. close my eyes and dial).
but i think that this is really the best bet for plug and go. a natural extention of the amp.

I had an old St George Solid State outboard reverb forever...it cost about US $25 and worked great forever! Finally sold it for $175 on the Ebay after I bought the Fender RI tank...

Of course there is the the Fender reverb tank . . . there is nothing quite like 'that' sound
I got the Boss RV-5, its got a great sound, no drip but a very musical tone, got some great setting on it
Also, just bought the Digitech Istomp and downloaded the Spring reverb, very disappointing. I got the 2 reverb pedals side my side on my pedal board, now I just leave the RV-5 on and don't bother with the Istomp (I won't sell, maybe they will write a better software version one day for it)

I really like the Shadow Sprang Thang reverb pedal. They were available for demo at the Convention, so it would be interesting to get other impressions. Just one knob and an on/off footswitch.
The thing I like about it is the sparkle and lightness to the tone. I also have the Boss FRV-1. The two are quite different. No matter how I dial the FRV-1, I can't get that same light, sparkly tone.
The really interesting thing about the Sprang Thang is how well it matches up with tweed amps. No darkness or clutter like you usually get because of the mids profile.

I have heard that if you want to get that pure authentic Fender sound, you need to buy a Gomez Tank!
I should've demo'd that Sprang Thang at the convention. I have a Tank and an FRV-1, plus some killer onboard reverb, but you can't have enough reverb options in my opinion.

Before the FRV-1 came out, everybody always recommended the Digitech Digiverb. The FRV-1 is obviously better but you can usually find them for about $50 and the spring setting is pretty decent. I haven't used it since I found a tank though.

Hey Josh,
I have one of Dario's G-Spring units and they are super high quality (as a lot of people around here will attest to). You can't go wrong there.
I have sort of a specialty use for the Sprang Thang. I really like the tone that you get out of tweed amps, but they need a little something more than just the resonance of the pine cabinet. But all of my attempts to add reverb in various forms to them just didn't sound right.
However, when I tried the tweeds with the Sprang Thang, they just clicked. You get a wonderful sparkle and there is no dark tone holding it down.
On Sunday, we actually filmed a demo of the Sprang Thang with a Victoria Ivy League amp (our lead guitarist, Eddie Montana, did the playing). This amp, by the way, is really cool. It's a 1x10 in a Deluxe cabinet that is really loud with great tone, but weighs just 18 pounds. It's a nice loudness to weight ratio for those looking for a light carry.
This Saturday we're scheduled to film two more demo's of the pedal, one with a little Champ and one with a tweed Bassman.
It will take a while to assemble them and get them up on YouTube. Once they are there I will post them in Brian's Sprang Thang thread.
Oh, in the interest of disclosure, we have no financial ties to either Shadow Amplification or Victoria.
As someone who always looks for good demo's before buying, I just thought it would be cool to make these and get them out there.

you wanna know a secret?...for a while, I used an alesis nanoverb for guitar: it sounded excellent! At that time, was using a Peavey solid-state amp: sacrilegious!

Still using the Alesis Nanoverb through a small solid-state Crate in the living room. Good for laid back, literally horizontal playing on Sunday mornings during the Cowabunga Uberalles, or whatever it's called surf show on Sirius radio.

I've been looking into the Danelectro Spring King and am almost ready to pull the trigger on it but I need to do a little more research first. For $140 bucks it seems pricey for a Dano pedal and all eBay has is new ones. It doesn't drip as much as the FRV-1 but it sounds better than my Twin's onboard, and I like that it has real springs for kicking The Little Lanilei looked cool but after hearing it, it doesn't have enough splashy verb, I hope the Spring King has some splash.

The Wampler Faux Spring Reverb changed my mind about reverb pedals. It is a little pricey but I got mine used for $150 shipped and it just drips authentic and oozes vintage sound. Amazing how little they are talked about...

Doesn't sound like a good outboard tank. Sounds like it is styled on onboard but a little thinner/more hollow.

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like Carl Martin has introduced the "Headroom" spring reverb box:

Listened to some youtube vids on the Carl Martin, eh, I think they need to show the surfy side cause it's mostly blues guys demo-ing it, but for an atmospheric reverb it sounds nice.
