Forbidden Island, Sonic Swell and KFJC Radio present the Third Annual Surfin' Smorgasboard on Sunday August 5th.

Advance ticket sales here:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/261301

This yearly showcase of international surf bands mixed up with tasty Bar-B-Que always satisfies the senses (and packs the club.) Enjoy an ice cold rum cocktail and listen to bands that you will likely never have the chance to see live again.

Headlining the Smorgasboard is EL RAY, from Copenhagen, Denmark, making their USA premier at the Forbidden Island. The band is known for causing (real) crowd surfing at it's gigs. They're latest album is called "Highwave to Hell" and they are one of the standout bands on the recent "Brave New Surf" compilation. Check out their moody new video "Kodachrome Wipeout" at http://vimeo.com/42921707

LOS VENTURAS from Belgium, shocked the audience at the 2012 Surfer Joe Festival in Italy with their updated, soulful sound. Dressed like 70's swingers and rockin' the wah-wah on many songs, the grooves inspiring the crowd to sway like lithium was in the air. Los Venturas new album, "Kaleydoskop" will be available for this, their second, US tour. Check out their live version of Tommy James' "Dizzy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGo4dsGwayg

FRANKIE & THE POOL BOYS just returned from a 3 week tour of Italy, including headlining the closing night of the Surfer Joe Festival in Livorno, Italy. The band members have played with Pollo Del Mar, The Tomorrowmen, Meshugga Beach Party and the Wadadli Riders (Antigua). Regulars (on stage and at the bar) of the Forbidden Island, check out the "Skinny Dippin'" video shot there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtBeAq3-lsc

I'm going to have to win a lottery to have enough money to quit work and have time to go to these places. That's got to be great. Somebody please take lots of video.

Holy Wow, what a perfect combination of music, weather, club, people, liquor and BBQ!!! This show was a total success. The Forbidden Island was once again packed to it's thatched roof with surf fans. Viking surf from El Ray, suave grooves from Belgium, the Pool Boys doing whatever it is that we do. Sliders on the grill soaking up the "Golden Surfer" cocktails. KFJC radio giving full support and bringing in many new fans. Some out of town surf mafia and local surf royalty showed up. Wow!
Thanks to everyone who made this show possible-
The Forbidden Island for being the home to surf music in the Bay Area
kFJC for continuing to give full support to our music
Big Tiki Dude for bringing the Int'l bands for the convention
Chad for grilling sliders all day
Surfer Joe Lorenzo for coming to play drums with the Pool Boys
Thanks!!!

That was an unbelievably kickass show! Yes

I concur! What a thrill to have Los Venturas and El Ray on our home turf. They were both so good!!! Each one taking various influence and weaving them into the surf genre and coming out completely unique. It really inspired me. Great players and really nice people. A HOME RUN at Forbidden Island!!!

I am still trying to process this weekend - the event at Forbidden Island was epic - if I wasn't going to see Los Venturas and El Ray two more times this week, I'm not sure I could stand it!

It was a huge!!! show, and barely room to move,
But I have to say I was a little bummed that some of the Nor. Cal. mainstay surf fans were not there.
what happened?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Somehow, some way, not only was I blessed with being able to attend this show, but I had the best seat in the house too!!! Cool

Frankie & the Pool Boys brought more than just the gear. They brought a great energy & vibe and they played a GREAT set to get us all started!

Los Venturas has an utterly unique sound & vibe. It sounds like a cool retro 60s Euro movie soundtrack with reverb. Infectious grooves and a killer sound, and not to mention really great guys! I am looking forward to hearing them play many more times this week!

El Ray's high energy set can be summed up in this statement (and new El Ray song title): EL RAY-NIA UBER ALLES!!!!

Shows like these (where the bands were all perfect and the crowd was huge and loud and REALLY into it, and the drinks were tasty, and the venue was awesome) are pretty rare.

If you missed this show, you should go find a paper bag, draw a sad face on it, then wear it over your head all week.
