Anybody use these for surf??????

There's a two page discussion HERE

The "search" function up in the top right corner is our friend. Wink

Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

Thanks, I saw that one, but, it doesn't give me the info I was hoping for, or maybe I it does and I just am not understanding it. Confused

HERE'S another one.

Off the top of my bald head:

Rev Hank (Urban Surf Kings);
Paul Johnson (early career with the Bel Airs);
Ferenc Dobronyi (Pollo del Mar) (not lately though);
Big Wave Dave (AquaMarines, BroDaddy, Twang Tens);
Bill Bergstrom (Lava Rats) (Dano Baritone... in fact a lot of the baritone guitars that you hear in surf are Danelectros or Jerry Jones baritones with lipstocks);

and (not surf, but...) Link Wray.

I'm sure there are dozens more I haven't listed. I'm a nobody, but I have a Reverend Spy with lipsticks and a Dano 1956 U2 reissue. Either one is fine for surf, but I mostly play the Spy because it has a Bigsby, while the Dano has no whammy on it. I got into lipstick pickups because of David Lindley, Ry Cooder, Jimmmy Page, Randy California, Joey Spampinato and the rock guys using them in the 60's & 70's. That some of the surf guys used them was something I didn't discover till later.

I have them on my baritone..like em..like em on Dano's 2

I have a '90's Dano shorthorn bass reissue with a pair of lipsticks. Very nice tone but the pickups don't have as much output as the ones on a Precison or Jazz Bass.

Not a problem if the amp is cranked a notch or two.

I'll let you know soon once the GFS lipsticks I purchased are installed in my refinished Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze Korean-era Squier II Strat. My first project profiled here and at the Squier '51 Modders Site another Korean-era Squier II Strat repainted Krylon Coral Isle Mist has GFS Surf 90's which are dynamite and all indications are the GFS lipstick pickups will do well when playing surf tunes.

Yep, got them in my Mustang

Right now this guitar is black with lipstick pickups. I am thinking about taking it apart and painting it surf green. I just bought a loaded pickguard from a Squier 50's classic vibe to put in it. I am thinking of painting the headstock also, but, where would I be able to get a fender starcaster logo to add to it? Or should I just leave the headstock alone? What color pickguard would be best for the color. The 50's classic vibe is white with cream colored pickup covers and knobs. I am thinking that it would look good on a surf green guitar.

yes.

If you like lipstick pickups, wait for the squier lipstick surf strat they are bringing out this year. I am really curious who it sounds !

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

Man, that thing looks sweet!!!!

I've got them in my Jerry Jones bass, which is really the only bass that I have used to play surf on for 15 years or more. so in a word yes.

Our guitarist, Brandt, uses a Dano U2 reissue (mid 90s) occasionally.

I've purchase 2 RI "vintage" Danelectro's. one is in a '62 Silvertone "porpoise head" Dano and the other is a center pickup on a custom Telecaster. Both sound very good, basically like single coils , in general, a little more brown in tone to my ear. I like 'em. I play the Tele alot and use that pickup most of the time, nice balance between rhythm and lead playing in a single PU. I started life in a 60's surf band playing rhythm on a Silvertone with a lipstick tube. Worked great!

I have 4 on my Dano 6/12 Doubleneck, and they are fine for surf. I especially like the sound of the two pickups together in series.
Bob-I had Ferenc's Spy for a while. Spoiled by the P-90's on my Slingshot though, and let it go.
