Permalink good pups for a jagmaster project? Surf90s?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I bought my daughter a jagmaster a few years back and quickly turned it into a project (new pups, american tuners, upgraded wiring, etc). Right now it sports two japan fender HH jag pups and single texas special strat pup in the middle. I use a rotary switch for all sorts of combinations, but sadly, none are all that great. I think I used 500K pots.

I want to simplify things and want to drop two twangy single coils in the bucker slots (the guard has been modded to accept classic rectangular chrome covers). Guitar fetish seems like the place to start and I am wondering who has used there pups in a jagmaster? Leaning toward surf90s, but the other 90s look interesting too. Curious to know what size pot would be best for these pups - 1 Meg?. Hoping for a surfy/fenderish/offset tone.

Be curious to know what others have done.

I have the GFS Surf 90's in my Korean-era Squier II Strat and they are fantastic, just as described. As per GFS customer service I'm using 250k pots but others have been told to install 500k, either way you go I doubt you'll be disappointed as the Surf 90's are a great value. Check out my projects both here and at the Squier '51 Modders Forum under the same screen name "Blackheartsfan". I would post links but I'm working with my first laptop and not as familiar with it as my desktop.

Surf 90s are fantastic. I'd go with them.

I'd go with the surf 90s. I never owned these but I have seen many videos of these pickups and they sound great. The concept is a humbucker sized dearmond dynasonic so its really got that twang. I own the gfs mean 90s which are great pickups but wouldn't use 'em for surf. They sound really raw and are great for garage/psychedelic music. I own 7 gfs pickups and all of them are great and the quality is amazing for the price.

I would recommend to use 250k pots with these otherwise the sound will be too bright.

Thanks for the info..I did find a few youtubes and the surf 90s really sound great...I am sold!

Ordered a pair today...my daughter decided on chrome/black so I broke down and bought black strat knobs, switch cover, cover for the strat pup, etc. I prefer off-white, but hey, its her guitar!

Could you please post some clips when you complete the project? I'd be very interested in hearing the Surf 90s playing actual surf. Thanks.

Wow, that song makes surf 90's sound awesome! I have been on the fence for a while about putting a set of them in my Jagmaster.
This makes up my mind!

Hi all!
This is my first post.
Thanks of this page I have a jagmaster vista CIJ.
I love this guitar, but I gonna change the pickups.
I've ordered the gfs surf90.
I gonna put some picks when finish the mod.

DeadRanchHands - nicely done! Great tone and you play it well.

After starting this thread, I bought a pair of Surf90s, but never got around to installing them. Instead I changed the rotary switch (first mod) to a 3 way toggle and have really enjoyed the two japan fender HH jag pups that I had put in there. The texas special that I put in the middle (turned on using a pull/volume pot)is nothing special.

But after hearing Bring Me The Blaggard What Stole My Horse I am motivated to make the swap when I have some time next week!

13thmagicskull,
Welcome to SG 101
Hope you like the Surf 90's
I love them in my Eastwood Map guitar and so does our other guitar player, in fact he won't give it back LOL
250K pots in mine.

I have Surf 90's w/500k pots in a strat guitar I built. My main guitar has TV Jones Magnatrons and the Surf 90's hold their own tone-wise.
Here is a live sample of the Surf 90's

From what I understand the Surf 90 are supposed to be an attempt by GFS to make P90-sounding, humbuckered-sized pickups.

So here are some questions for the more experienced.

  1. How do the Surf 90s compare to Seymour Duncan's SPH90-1N Phat Cats?
(They're supposed to be aiming for the same sound)

  2. I'm considering installing a TV Jones Classic Bridge and a P90 HB clone (surf or fat cat) Neck pickup on a derelict Epiphone Les Paul I have. Any thoughts on this?

It's her guitar, but it's your project?!

I had a set of GFS P90's they sounded really good - good choice. Wire them up as humbuckers when you have them both together

RaistMagus,

The Surf 90's are not an attempt to create a hum size P-90.
They are an attempt to create a DeArmond Dynasonic style pickup, a very different sound from a P-90. Dynasonics (and Surf 90's) are much clearer, with less mids and a slightly fatter bottom end than a P-90.

Here's a good, general rule of thumb. If the pickup has slug polepieces it will have a clearer sound. If it has screw polepieces it will have more mids, less clarity and tighter bass. This is just a generalization. There are exceptions and other factors but it's a good generalization.

To compare the Duncan Phatcats and the Surf 90's - The Phatcats have more mids and lower mids, a bit darker than the Surf 90 and tighter low end with less highs.

Your second question - Either pickup would work great in the neck position on your Epiphone. If you want a slightly thicker, fuller sound go with the Phatcat, if you want something a bit clearer, almost Strat-like then go with the Surf 90
Hope that helps some.

Thanks CrazyAces! I guess a TV Jones Classic at the bridge would go well with a Dynasonic at the neck : )

That's a pretty common Gretsch mod here in our shop that we've done to reissue Gretsch guitars

Cheers,

Another option for a low cost humbucker-sized single coil is the GFS Dream 90. Not as mean as the Mean 90, but definitely a bit beefier than the usual Fender single coil. Plus they come in black pearloid.
