Permalink Shigeo Naka: Mission One

New Topic

Those on the Surf Coasters' official Facebook feed are probably seeing the same things I'm seeing, some studio activity! Not sure if this will even be a surfy release or not, but it's always intriguing to see what Shigeo is cooking up, even solo projects. Anyone in the loop that has more details? Here's a couple of studio pics for those not on FB:

And an interesting gold "Jazzocaster" he's playing, that is featured on the album cover:

The guitar is definitely a Suhr, but I don't really see it on the Suhr site (they have something close with humbuckers), perhaps it's a custom job.

Having completely broken up w/ FB, I almost never think to go back and cruise the public "pages" for bands and whatnot - so Thanks for spreading the news!

No problem... I'm thinking it's probably going to be more of a rock project, but you never know if he'll be throwing some surf-scraps here and there.

Maybe Ferenc has the scoop?

For better or worse I'm guessing something along the lines of Outside Break. :/

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Well that clears it right up. Laughing

I've just noticed he has a downloadable single: "Shigeo Naka Yuyake Breeze". October 2011 release. Nice tune.

The samples on Amazon, to me, are stylistically all over the map... except surf. I hear some Shadows influence on a few things. Neither the downloads nor the CD are available for sale, although you can listen to short samples.

Hmm ... "Midnight Highway" (thankfully not an Accept cover) sounds pretty cool.

Not sold on a few of those samples but I'm sure the album will be an interesting listen just like Outside Beach was.

Nice, Ferenc, you'll have to let us know what you think!

Well, I don't think it's the album we want, but clearly it's the album Shigeo wanted to make. Shigeo takes producer role, and this is his vision. I'm not sure if this style of instrumental music is popular in Japan, but I've never heard stuff like a lot of what you find here. Maybe I don't get out much.
Many of the tunes here are soundscapes, with credits given to the programmer rather than a band. On the soundscape pieces, it's hard to say if the lead tones are heavily effected guitars, guitar synths, or keyboard synths. But they are moody, dreamy, and I think the kids might use the word "chill" for the backbeats. One song, Yuyake Breeze, has an acoustic lead over a worlds of wonder / love boat / international cha cha with harps and marimbas - that one is a head scratched for me, but again, maybe that kind of thing is current in Japan. I dig the songs recorded with a band (that includes the Surf Coaters Kuri on bass)' Midnight Highway, Turn Back Time, Starting Over Again. Shigeo's tone on these tunes is less effected, more in the Clapton ballpark.
The writing, if you are familiar with Naka's catalog, remains inventive, very melodic, and broad. Naturally the guitar playing is on the genius level of taste. One thing I'm really happy about this CD is that Shigeo avoided the first time solo album syndrome where a guitarist has 12 songs in 12 different styles, so he can show that can emote the blues, shred, chicken pick, wail on an acoustic, etc. Naka certainly can do all those things, but he's preferring to be himself and let his personality shine through. This isn't a demo disc of his abilities. If you are a fan of the Surf Coasters, you will see this as the next step on the path their leader is on.
I don't know if it's worth buying the CD, probably best to choose individual tracks from iTunes, if you can figure out how. I'm sure it would end up being $30, which would make it a dollar per minute.

No one plays guitar like Shigeo so it gets bought. Especially since the download price is so cheap. File under: Inoffensive simple melodic instrumental dream-state guitar music with dash of sonic the hedgehog surrealism. There might be a nod or two towards the music of Polo Del Mar...? Overall, just my opinion of course, Mission One has a Japanese video game quality. If you can’t get past level 2 then the music won’t bug you too much. Bottom line, i’ll just go where Shigeo takes me.

I hate to say it, as I love the Surf Coasters, but the iTunes preview clips sound like bad stock music samples from a video library.
