Permalink Cab help for Showman

New Topic

Hello all, I would really like to hear your advise on this.
I got a (re-tolexed) '65 Showman head a week ago (thread HERE), and here's a pic:

Pardon me for opening a new topic, but I need some fresh help specifically on my cabinet options, of which locally there aren't too many.

2nd hand there's nothing I find suitable, and importing one is overly expensive. That leaves me with building a custom cab (don't wanna get into this right now), or buying a new one.

I'm leaning towards 2x12", as it would give me the most versatility, I presume. 2x15" is way too much for me, and 1x15"... I don't know... your advice needed here Confused , but I can't find any for sale.
BTW my amp is 8ohm.

I found:
1- Carvin 212E
2- Carvin GT12

Both seem to be light, with reasonable speakers. Not crazy about no.1 'cos it's build doesn't look Fender style, and in the future I plan to re-tolex whatever I buy to match my amp.

3- Fender Band-Master VM212
At least is looks Big Grin like a Fender, and it's closed back, but I heard the speakers in it (Celestion 'G12P-80', or 'Seventy 80'- anyone has experience with these?) are quite harsh sounding, and I'm trying to steer away from that as much as possible. Possibly with Reverb (Tank or FRV) it will even accentuate this trebely character even more. I want a round, warm tone, don't care much for volume.
Upgrading the speakers in the future is a viable option, but not just yet...

That's it actually. All 3 above are pretty cheap, but the next step is a custom build with vintage speakers (over my head for now). Not much middle ground here.
I'm the first person to say 'use your ears, boy!' but lugging around the Showman to multiple shops is quite difficult for me, so any opinion on the matter will be appreciated.
Thanks!

When funds permit and if you can find someone in your country who will build a Fender clone cabinet, a 1x15 speaker in a 1x12 tone ring size cabinet (21"x30")works very well, is plenty loud for gigging in most venues and is relatively easy to transport. A 2x12 is great as well but is larger and heavier.

Here's a pic of the one that my friend Eddie Katcher built for me in his basement shop. This one was set up for bass and is 15" deep instead of 11.5" like a standard Showman cab.

I have the Carvin 212E, it is my main cab used with a Silver face Bassman. The Carvin speakers are modeled after Celestion Vintage 30s, I liked their sound but I replaced them with EVM-12L speakers that were given to me and now the cab screams but it is about as heavy as a Twin Reverb. I love the size, about as small as you can get for 2 x 12 and I also prefer the open back. I played through a blond Showman with a 15" JBL several times and I much prefer the sound my own rig. I just picked up a Black face Bassman yesterday so the Carvin speakers will be put to use again, I like to use 2 amps.

I play my Blackface Bassman trough the Bandmaster VM 212 and you're right about the harsh sound. A speaker replacement is highly recommended if you buy that cab.

Great idea, really, thanks for the suggestion. I'd like a thing like that a lot.
The Showman came with a 15" TR cab originally, didn't it?

Can you please elaborate on why exactly you prefer your 2x12 (in terms of sound)?
Would you still have preferred it with the orig. speakers? What's their character?
Thank you.

Thanks, good to know. Many reviews I read said so, but I trust my Surf brethren.
I would really want the opposite of that sound, but it's so frustrating to but a cab and replace the speakers right away... what, did I buy a wooden box for 500$ Argh not even the right Tolex for me... Well, it's an option nevertheless.

I need to set my mind on something soon,
help me decide, please Confused more opinions welcome!
