Permalink Bass player looking to establish a Surf/Instro network in Florida.

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I'd like to start some kind of running communication with other Surf/Instro musicians and enthusiasts in the state of Florida. For a state that's surrounded on three sides by huge bodies of water, Surf music is seriously under-represented here.
Websites like Surfguitar101 are great but, websites have been known to occasionally disappear suddenly, taking all of your contacts with it!

This site is probably not going anywhere; not to imply that you shouldn't try to establish your own independent network of contacts.

CUTBACK

It was an idea that I had after talking to Shelby Cobbra, here on SurfGuitar101, a drummer/guitarist out of Melbourne. We talked about how isolated Florida seems to be. We're not really on the way for bands going from gig to gig on the continent. They would have to have specific paying gigs for any prominent Surf bands to come down this way. And where I live in Largo in the Tampa Bay area Surf bands are extremely rare. The Ventures were at Busch Gardens for four days a few months ago but, that's about it for years. Dick Dale was here many, many years ago.
Two local bands, The Wrenchers and The Hodaddy's make the rounds regularly but other than that, it's pretty dry here. Rockabilly has started to grow in this area though, that's promising.
I'd expect that Miami and Ft. Lauderdale has a much better Surf Music scene. Shelby Cobbra in Melbourne has had no luck meeting other Surf players.
My thoughts are that we Floridians could use a platform to communicate or maybe organize Surf/Rockabilly/Instro Feativals or something along those lines. Helping musicians to meet others and form bands. Maybe Facebook or something similar could be a way to do it.
I'm thinking of maybe three or four Florida areas: North, Central(East & West?), and South.
If the upper-tier bands won't come here then we'll create our own and do it ourselves. Then maybe after we gain some level of presence, they'll come down.

Intoxicators are great an active in Tallahassee. We're talking with some other players to play some N FLA gigs in the future.

Surfgitar is in a south Florida based band, CutBack, and I know they get up to the Space Coast every now and then. We have been priveledged to have Slacktone play in south Florida, and The Intoxicators were in Delray Beach just a few months ago. Danny Morris is also based out of Cocoa Beach. He mainly plays blues, but throws in a lot of surf instros, including originals. There are a couple of other outfits down here, but nothing as established as CutBack.
I would think FL would be a natural, but it is more Jimmy Buffett than Dick Dale unfortunately.

I know that we plan on hitting the Panhandle and Gainsville before the year is out. However, I can understand what you are saying. Florida is a strange place in regard to general geography. I once heard it stated by an old punk band that Florida could encompass an entire tour on it's own. This is more true than you know. Hell, I believe Daikaiju pretty much spent the majority of one of their tour legs in that state.

Thunderbass - We have a gig in Satellite Beach on April 30th at:
Longdoggers, 1201 S. Patrick Dr 6-9pm.
I'll post a flyer in show announcements later next week.

CUTBACK

Surfgitar, I'll be there with some folks for the Longdoggers show April 30th, look forward to meeting you and hearing your band CutBack.

Thunderbass, looks like your Florida networking is already working. It's probably too far a drive for you for the Longdoggers show but if you happen to show up, I'll buy you a beer Wink

Cool. Cool

CUTBACK

Fun show by Cutback last night at Longdoggers. The friends I invited enjoyed hearing some pure instrumental surf music. For this area I think playing at a place that has good food, good beer selection and a nice outdoor area works pretty well rather than just playing in a bar. There are plenty of surfers with families who can enjoy this kind of event. Enjoyed meeting some musicians from around the area including nearby Satellite Beach and Orlando. Looking forward to their next show.

On my Space Coast surf music radar I see Dick Dale will be playing here in Melbourne Wed June 15 with Laramie Dean.

Thunderbass, I eventually had to drink that beer I was saving for you. Maybe next time!

Shelby Cobbra - Thanks for the kind words. It was great meeting you. We had a blast playing up there and hope to do it some more.

CUTBACK

Hey Shelby Cobbra,
Sorry I missed it! Thanks for the beer anyway, I was there in spirit. I've been laid up for over 6 weeks now. I had knee surgery on April 4th and my leg began to swell about 2 weeks later. I developed blood clots in my leg, and they found some in my lungs. Damn good thing that I took the initiative to have an ultra sound done which led to the discovery of the blood clots. Spent a full seven days in the hospital and I'm on blood thinners until they're gone. So, lots of fun! Near death experiences are very exciting!
All of my music activities are on hold. Hopefully I can drive again in time to see Dick Dale. I'll definitely drive up. I'll keep in touch so that we that maybe we can finally meet.
Randy

Hey Floridians,
Got drums? I'd appreciate hearing about any surf/instro happening in West/Central FL in early June. I play surf drums, looking for opportunity to play/jam/attend some surf while visiting. Please PM me with any info. Thanks!

Friday June 3rd at the Mai Kai. But that's in South Florida.

CUTBACK

Thanks, Surfgitar! Your show has added worthy substance for our desire for a "side trip" to Ft. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and the Mai Kai! We went there as kids few times back in the '70's. The Missus was starting her hotel research as I left this morning.

CUTBACK

Thanks, Surfgitar. You met our Aquatudes guitarist, Tom, last year. Looks like we're gonna stay in Lauderdale for a day or two, and plan to attend the Mai Kai Cutback show on Friday night. See you there!
