Permalink The Omar Khorshid Appreciation Thread

New Topic

Its funny how when you trace through the lineage of musicians you are inspired by you inevitably find what inspired them. This was the case for me with Sir Richard Bishop. I've been a huge fan of his for quite some time and have been digging into his influences quite a bit. Bishop's recent release, The Freak of Araby (which has easily become one of my favorite all time albums) has been said to be a tribute to Egyptian guitarist/composer, Omar Khorshid. The album contains several Khorshid covers.

Sublime Frequencies (run by ex- Sun City Girl, Alan Bishop) has put out a double LP release of his work titled, Guitar El Chark. I snapped this up when I saw it at Thirsty Moon Records in San Diego and have been salivating over it ever since. I can't recommend this album highly enough!

Khorshid is an absolute incredible composer and guitarist and for those that are turned on by Arabic music in general, this is an absolute treasure trove of some of the highest quality music I've ever heard. His music has been labeled everything from Belly Dance Music to Egyptian Surf. He was wildly popular in Lebanon and did much of his great work there. There is an obvious connection between Khorshid's influences and those of the more exotic surf musicians like Dick Dale, Randy Holden, and Phantom Frank.

I've got the Freak of Araby, it's a fantastic album.

Ah yes, belly dancer music. I dated a belly dancer for a very short while. She could wiggle the skin off a grape to Omar's music . But in bed she was as still as a frozen lake.

sorry for the thread drift. Now back to our regular topic. He could play up a storm, but it often wore me out listening to him. I saw and see nothing surf in his music. But I see much of his music style in surf music.

cool stuff, thanks for a heads up.

This is really cool, thanks for the recommendation!

Found this video on the tubes. The music in the video and the playing are totally unrelated, but a cool look at Khorshid in action

Thanks Ryan! I love Exotic and Exotica music. I wasn’t familiar with Omar Khorshid who seems to transcend a variety of styles. Amazing and versatile player! Even though he’s Egyptian he has a strong Spanish guitar feel to his stuff.

Found a bunch of great stuff on You Tube!

Some Very DICK DALE style playing at minute 2:00 on this one…

He also did the THE GODFATHER theme…

His Spanish playing really shines on these two, Maleguena and Sorenzana…

Here's a clip from the 60's with nice close-ups of his technique. I dig how he mixes Spanish and Middle Eastern influences... And check out his very surfy double picking 45 seconds in!

Totally cool playing – I wonder what amp he used. Must be 1968 -70 by the headstock and the outfits of the girls in the cafe-set audience. Makes me sad that this picture of a civil, progressive SECULAR and cosmopolitan Middle-East has been largely erased by intolerance. And the new bunch definitely don't surf.

Squink Out!

Yeah this cat Omar is def sic with it. (like my slang?) Thanks for pointing him out to me everybody.

Fantastic! I was recently introduced to Omar and "El Chalk" and he is amazing. Also, introduced to another exotic surf shredder from further east, Elman Namazoglu. Digging that sound and guitar.

"Why don't mustached men shower me with money and kisses whenever I play?" Comment made by my friend Ross from the Austin surf band, Del-Vipers after seeing the Elman video. I now aspire for this highest form of appreciation as well. Cool
