This week I played tracks from some of the bands that I saw at Surfer Joe last week. I think their music made it a good show!

Last night's Reverb Hour began with Paul Johnson talking about the origin of the term "surf music" - from a recording I made at Surfer Joe last month.

I'm so happy to have access to these archives, because now I can hear the show that I couldn't hear when I was actually there due to the ultra-low volume.

Thanks again for this wonderful show!
Was it really that quiet? I noticed that the mix was a bit unbalanced sometimes.
I enjoyed all three bands, but must say that the Kilaueas were probably my favorite because of the energy and the overall sound. Besides that I was most pleasantly suprised to hear Frankie & the Poolboys play "Moment of Truth" including the piano. That was probably the first time somebody did that since the 60s. There should be more piano in surf again!

It was unbelievably quiet, someone said it was due to nearby residents' noise complaints. Every five minutes some guy was walking around with a decibel meter checking the volume. My wife (who almost NEVER goes to surf shows with me) said the volume was perfect, which tells you just how quiet it really was. Luckily I get to see Threesome and the Kilaueas again tonight at the traditional ear-shattering volume.
