LaFleur was asking about the Cali and I offered to make him a video comparing the two. This is one of the reasons I like to have two of something so I can A B Stuff "Pepsi Challenge" The only thing this video doesn't test is at High Volume. I was at 2 for most of the video and maybe bumped it to 3 toward the end. I didn't want to distort the camera. Also I have a wonky tripod so the picture moves a bit by the end. I should have warmed up a bit first but you guys should get the idea. Its a little long but look at the description all the times that I change cabs and guitars are noted.
The JBL is very HI FI and the cali has some mid color. The cali also handles power better the JBL tends to fart at my stage volume and also costs 3x more to replace. JBL is killer but the cali is my pic and is what I take out all the time. If the 212 cab with D120's wasn't buried in the gear room I would have thrown that in the mix too and maybe the blackface 212 w/ C12n's
maybe another video??

Kind of a win/win, but The Cali has a slightly more appealing tone to my ears. That said one might work better than the other depending on what song you were playing.
Thanks for the A/B vid, nothing like hearing for yourself.

They both sound very good! I'm not sure which I like more, to be honest.

Got it!! It's funny if there was no comparison I would be happy with either one... However, the Weber has a better midrange quality ... Also a better value!

I agree they are both very nice. Its not a blood bath by any means.
I like the color of the cali a little more for all around surf and $120 for a new one is fine by me!
Whats your favorite guitar in the vid
Mosrite or Jazzmaster. Im having the same battle with them. I love them both. Mosrite has been A for last two years but last dozen gigs I Jazzmaster is A guitar.
I might go back to Mosrite for a while.
PS both guitars have deader strings on them
They both need changed.

Thanks for posting that! To me there is not enough of a difference that could not be compensated for with a knob or playing position. I have been disappointed in Webers, Jensen style speakers but the Cali seems to be working!
Cool Test. I just hate it when folks call California Cali... it's a personal thing.

Wow, that's an excellent vid, Scot. Thanks for posting!
I'm normally a huge JBL D130F fan, particularly in the studio but based on what I'm hearing the Cali cuts through significantly better without being harsh or ice-picky. Both setups sound great with either guitar but my old ears prefer the Cali, just slightly. At least through your rig. It may be different with a combo or non-tone ring cabinet.
I have a '62 brownface Pro with a factory JBL D130F and a '96 Custom Vibrasonic with a Weber California ceramic 15. This may not be a fair comparison as the Vibrasonic has 4x the power of the Pro, but at equal (loud) volume levels, the Pro with the JBL sounds way smoother than the Cali in the VS. The VS/Cali sounds fine...it cuts nicely through a mix with no harshness, but it doesn't have anywhere near the same voice/swirl as the Pro/JBL. But that is most likely the difference between a brownface vintage Fender amp and a later PCB Fender.
I do believe the Cali will have more clean headroom in whatever amp/cabinet it is in and I'm really impressed that the Cali sounds as good as it does in your rig. The tone ring (and brownface head) has to be a significant contributor.
Your Mosrite sounds WAY better than the '65 I used to have. I sold it because I never could get the tone I was looking for, plus the skinny neck didn't like my chubby fingers..or vice versa.

Cool video. Your Calis sound way better than mine did in my BF Dual Showman (which has JBL D120Fs in it now.) Mine sounded as if there was a blanket over the cabinet and I broke them in for what seemed like forever. I'm sure a lot of this has do do with that brownface amp your playing through. The Calis sound much fuller than the JBLs in the video. Are your JBLs original cones or reconed?

And what kind of shape is it in? My D130F sounds very different, it's a lot less trebly than the one in the video. Is the Weber aluminum dome or paper dome? Based on your video I'd vote for the Weber but based on my own experience (I own both speakers) I'd have to vote for the JBL by a long shot.

I voted for the California. It sounds pretty good. There are other factors to take into consideration here, though. I EQ my California way differently than an Eminence 15 I was using previously in the same amp. Are all tone knobs set at 12:00, for example?
Like Dannylectro, I am likewise curious if it is an aluminum dustcap in the Weber. And Ryan makes a good point. Has the speaker been reconed and if so, to what spec?

Good questions here Scot.. The Video is kinda dark so I never thought to ask if the California has a aluminum dust cover and also is the JBL D 130f original or a re- cone?

D130 original cone and in great shape. Like woody I also have a 62 Pro with Factory D130 sounds the same as this one. I also have another D130 and a D140 laying around.
The Webber doesn't have an aluminum dust cap. I got it with the cab and someone ordered it that way
In the beginning of the video everything is flat (knobs at noon) then later I eq a bit.
