Why do non-surf musicians always associate these with surf? I mean, they work well for surf, but they're hardly the norm.

Non Surf players do strange and inexplicable things. The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. Last edited: Feb 27, 2010 19:12:22 |

I've always sort of wondered about lipstick pickups and I've never used a guitar that has them. Are these just underwound pickups that produce a higher frequency and jangly sort of sound? Does the way they are encased influence the kind of frequencies they pick up? —Sonic Screwdriver |

Interesting timing of this thread...I just installed a Seymour Duncan lipstick pup in the middle position on my Squier Strat. When I was researching the pickup it did always seem to mention surf somewhere in the description. I would definitely agree about less twang than your normal single coil. The lipstick also has less bass which I think contributes to the jangly sound. I really like having the lipstick as another sound available on the Strat. —Stacy |

I love 'em. I put a set of Seymour Duncans in my Strat, and have them in my Dano's (of course).. When I put them in my Strat, my band members said I was making a great guitar cheap!

I'm glad revhank posted here, he was the inspiration for me looking into these. I read an earlier post of his in another thread regarding pickups and it got me curious. Thanks!!! —Stacy |

Well, Paul Johnson of the Bel-Airs DID play a lipstick-equipped axe back in the day... |

I made a guitar for surf and put Surfcaster lipstick pickups on it and it sounds great. I played it as part of the Twang Twisters. It can be heard on the Joey Reyolds Show with Unsteady Freddie. I would put up a photo but I can't figure out how to. Charles Wyndham Hickin |

I have one in the bridge of my Tele w/Bigsby. I love it and it works great for surf, but the norm for surf is vintage Strat, JM and Jag pickups. — |

I have always though that lipstick pups belong on a tele, not a strat. They sound sorta country to me. Joel |

Pretty far from surf territory, but Oliver Ackermann from the noise band A Place To Bury Strangers gets some sounds out of his lipstick-equipped Jaguar you wouldn't normally associate with lipstick pickups! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3024/2977469474_bc3d238821.jpg http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/5092334/A+Place+to+Bury+Strangers+aptb1.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PNUey8RiBU For those intrigued, he also manufactures his own fuzz pedals under the name Death By Audio. Apologies if this is an outstandingly uncouth contribution to a surf forum! |

The two lipstick p/us on my Jerry Jones baritone made a believer out of me. Excellent, fat twang. Later got hold of a JJ like Telestar guitar, with two lipsticks. Same deal. Can do surf, can do blues, can do pretty much anything. |

What type (brand) of lipsticks are used on a Jerry Jones? |

Jerry Jones manufactures his own pickups. Along with his lipstick pickups, his Filter'tron/Gretsch-style pickups are very highly regarded. From what I understand, he started out making pickups before he branched out into building guitars. Kent Armstrong makes some outstanding lipstick pickups. Joe Naylor (Reverend) used his pickups on his "Spy" model (when it was still in production). Bob —Bob |

I was just recording this simple guitar part for a friend's song - this is my Tele with the lipstick pickup in the bridge. It's got a little bit of neck pickup blended in (guitar is wired like a Jazz Bass), but it's mostly bridge pickup. It's one of my favorite sounds: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8827921 — |
