She also still owns the 60's Strat given to her by Eddie Bertrand.

This is making the rounds on FB (grrr)...

Even in the pic quality of the time at that FB blog thing, you can see the paint job in that guitar pops right along with her smile.

Man, this is just the greatest photo! Imagine being there for that show...

This is probably the best photo of the factory custom-painted gray-burst Strat that Eddie got from Leo Fender, too. What a beautiful guitar. I would love to have a Strat painted like that. I have a real weakness for Fender's pewter finish from the past 20-30 years.

I'll post this photo here, too, just so we can all once again see the cool custom-painted Strat sibling to his own, that Eddie gave to Kathy:

I want my 12-yr old to be like her, next year. Kathy is a great role model that girls need to hear more about.

Squink Out!

Here is this!

Cool, Jake. I've never seen the first pic. Is that a blackface/smooth blonde Showman? That would make this '64 or later, wouldn't it?

I also never noticed in the second picture of her with the sparkle burst Strat that Dick Dale is in the background.

Yeah, probably '64.

Here are more photos, one is a higher quality version that what was posted before. Can almost read the headstock.

Makes me so sad that she never had a recording career and soon retired from the stages she shared with DD & EB. Did she ever speak about her reasons not to pursue music professionally? Maybe she realized it would be too painful. I think of the Runaways and what happened to them in their tender years.
My own sister had a promising career as a singer in the Bay Area in the early 70s but gave up on it before it gave up on her. I guess it takes a real trouper to prevail as a female in rock'n'roll.

Squink Out!

Bob Dalley's book has a part on her that I read once, but I don't really remember. I need to read it again... She made a couple recordings written for her by the Ventures but they were never released. I think she ended up teaching guitar, academically.

Great pics!! What's not to love about a girl in a lame' shift dress playing a gold Jag?? Smile

Here she is again at the Retail Clerks Hall with David Marks of the Beach Boys and The Marksmen. From the Pop Surf Culture book by Domenic Priore and Brian Chidester.

Thanks Norm!

I haven't seen the Sound of Surf, did Kathy say anything new in it?

I don't think the Sound of Surf has come out.

I was hoping some of your down in the LA area had seen a preview...

Nothing terribly profound to add to this thread except to point out that there is not a single photo of Kathy that doesn't have her smiling that radiant smile of hers! She was adorable. If she really was as good as they say, it must have been quite a shock to hear those sounds coming from the hands of that little girl!

Finally, it pleases me GREATLY to see so many pics of Eddie playing a Strat Smile , especially this one, so freakin' COOL - thank you, Jake!

I like the dedication by Eddie on the Squad Car comp: "Kathy Marshall whom I wish I married and lived happily ever after with". Nice to imagine what a story that would have been...our own surf royal couple. Those pics are great. I would also guess c.'64 for the above pic because of the addition of Larry Carlton to the group pictured with the Jazzmaster on the left. For those who don't know, he was already a burgeoning guitar monster, soon to conquer the LA studio scene (famously with Steely Dan) and still active today.

Also awaiting "Sound of the Surf" news.
This thread, properly for its photo content & remembrances, needs to end up in the "Keep For-Ev-Uh" category.
