OK , I just read the wackiest review for a liqueur I've ever seen and had to share it. Feel free to reply anything you want on this thread (within reason). I went to a friends house on Thanksgiving and he invented a drink called The Gobbler - cranberry juice and Wild Turkey bourbon. One of the other guests brought the bourbon, but instead of normal WT, she brought Wild Turkey American Honey - which is really a liqueur, very sweet little bourbon flavor. I decided to buy a bottle which I'm now sipping from and enjoying. My curiosity getting the better of me, I was wondering what others thought of the stuff so I searched and found this little review. I won't print the whole thing, but this is how the writer described it:

_The Taste: HONEY, all day long. The bourbon is definitely there, but any alcohol sting I anticipated from the smell has been knocked unconscious, beaten within an inch of its life and left for dead in an abandoned washing machine factory by the hypnotic honey flavors found within. You would never, never-ever need to mix this to make it drinkable for a newbie, it’s very sweet, and just barely avoids being cloying.

It’s definitely a pure sweetness, it’s like Wild Turkey found that one really hot girl you knew in high school who was waaaaaaay out of your league but for some reason was really cool and actually talked to you and laughed at your lame Pokemon jokes* and didn’t care that you had seen The Matrix 37 times (in the theater, no less!) and you knew there was no way a girl like that should be talking to you in public, but she was, and they captured her and knocked her out with chloroform and systematically (but humanely) boiled her down to her basic genuinely sweet and caring nature and then poured her life essence into a bottle of bourbon, and branded it Wild Turkey American Honey. Can you believe that was only one sentence? THAT. JUST. HAPPENED._

you know something? He's right Cheers

Here's the whole review: http://www.drinkplanner.com/2008/08/19/bottle-shots-wild-turkey-american-honey/

Sounds like that was written under the influence of the stuff. I haven't tried it but when I think honey this is what I get.

The Gobbler is even better if you add a bit of Campari - makes it not quite as sweet so you're not so tempted to drink it down too fast. After all, the Wild Turkery American Honey is 71 proof, but as the reviewer described, the bourbon has been beaten within a inch of it's life.

Also, you can use pomegranite or cranberry/pomegranate juice for variations.

I don't know anything about the stuff yer talking about.

but I have some Barrenyager,(sp?) translated to Bear Hunter
and its actually a Honey Liqueur.
I heard that Germans made this Honey Liqueur to give to Bears to knock them out so if they shot them and they were still alive they didnt have to worry about still being mauled to death, because the Bears were drunk.

the one drink that I like to make with it is a Von Zipper.
1/2 ounce of Barren yagger 1/2 ounce of Stroh 80 a strong butterscotch rum from Austria , and a squeeze of real Lime juice.

it tastes amazing, but will take your breath away for a few seconds.
Shocked
great holiday shot.
Wink

you'll thank me later,

Danny wish I had seen this earlier as I went to the Liquor store today.

There are some great drinks with real honey like Don's Daiquiri.

I'm partial to Rum Jumbie. Rum liqueur with fruit juices. Bottle looks like Aunt Jemima's boyfriend.

Another really good one by Don The Beachcomber with a significant honey flavor is the quite potent Navy Grog.

3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce grapefruit juice
3/4 ounce honey
1 ounce light Puerto Rican rum
1 ounce dark Jamaican rum
1 ounce Demerara rum
1 ounce chilled club soda

Heat honey until liquid, then mix with juices in blender. Stir in rums and soda. Pour into double old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice.

I use liquid honey which is much less hassle and works great. Also substituting the Puerto Rican rum with Havana Club, naturally.

Barenjager is alright. If you want REAL honey liquor, you need to pick up some Krupnikas (Lithuanian Honey Vodka)

I have a friend who makes it, if anyone is interested. You cant find the LT stuff in the states (the Polish Krupnik can be found, but its not nearly as good)

Basically it is honey infused with everclear (or vodka for the lightweights) and spices (cinnamon, ginger, cloves... great holiday flavor). A shot of this will warm you up quick and leave your lips tasting sweet for a while. Its the best stuff on earth!

Something I make for the holidays (got 2 batches brewing right now) is a drink called 44 Coffee Bean Cordial. Basically you get an orange, make 44 slits in the orange and in the slits you put 44 coffee beans. You place it in a mason jar with 44 teaspoons of sugar and a liter of rum. I also add a single vanilla bean. You let it sit for 44 days (shake occasionally to mix it up) and then you strain and bottle it. Best served in a port glass over a single ice cube. Many flavors and will keep you warm (even though it's served cold). I tried a batch where I replaced the coffee beans for cloves, and wow, its VERY clovey. Not as good as the coffee batches, but still good for the holidays I think.

As for mixed liqueur drinks, I LOVE the Milky Way that the historic Tiki Ti serves.

1 part Baileys
1 part Kahlua
1 part Amaretto
1 part milk (2 parts to make it extra creamy)
Dash of sprite or 7-up to spritz it up.
Shake with ice. Serve.

mmmm...

only a few hours of work left... and then I am mixing up some milky ways and/or shooting some Krupnikas for sure!

Uh oh, Klas, did you just open the Tropical Cocktail door?
Good call! A Navy Grog is purrrrfect during the holidays!!!

Not to be too much of a geek about it (OK, that's impossible), but the original c. 1941 Don the Beachcomber recipe is ever-so-slightly different.
As voraciously researched by the world's foremost Tropical Cocktail expert, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, the original recipe called for 1/4 oz. less club soda and that the honey be utilized as "honey mix." This is a very important step, as it effects the texture and taste of the honey. "Honey Mix" is created through a process of taking equal parts honey and water and heating until honey is completely dissolved. This actually does create a flavor different from store-bought honey or liquid honey. Also, it's extremely important that the grapefruit juice be white.
I know you've been on TC since the early days and know your stuff, but I'm mentioning Jeff Berry here for the benefit of other SG101ers.
For those that didn't know already, Donn Beach and "Trader" Vic Bergeron had an ongoing rivalry which spurred some wonderful competitive drinks.
For instance, here's Vic's version of the Navy Grog, as approximated by The Bum, also great during the holidays, especially because of the allspice syrup:
3/4 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. white grapefruit juice
3/4 oz. allspice syrup (AKA "Grog Mix")^^
1 oz. dark Jamaican Rum
1 oz. Demerara Rum
Shake with crushed ice and pour into a double old-fashioned glass.
^^To make allspice syrup: Grind enough whole dried allspice berries to make 6 level tablespoons. Place the ground allspice in a saucepan with 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Bring it all to a boil, then cover and simmer for two minutes. Remove the saucepan from heat and — keeping it covered — let steep for two to three hours, then strain into a bottle and refrigerate.

Yeah, I'm very familiar with both recipies but simply prefer the one I posted which is from Berry's older Grog Log book. Also it's easy to get the impression that the recipe found in his more recent Remixed book is actually a modification done by Berry himself. For example the 1/4 ounce less soda water seems to be for compensating the additional water coming with the honey mix. And what's up with that he all of a sudden says it should be just shakened and not blended when all of Don's drinks of this type were blended. And shaking with the soda water removes the nice touch of it in the drink. Much better to stir the soda in with the rums after blending the honey and fruit juices.

I went and pulled out the Remixed book and it indeed looks like he modified the recipe himself: "We've revised the Log's Navy Grog recipe to take advantage of this syrup [honey mix]; now you can quickly shake up your honeyed Grog, instead of having to use heat and a blender".

Jonpaul's favorite Holiday drink(well anyday actually)
is the Dirty Sanchez drink I invented for this last Tiki Oasis.

For another great Holiday drink,
search on Tiki Central for the Voodoo Priestess
had one last night at a home party and it was mighty tasty.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

+1 for the Voodoo Priestess. Yum!!! Also good any time is the Reverb Crash. Need to get the stuff to make one. Been on my mind here lately.

The Voodoo Priestess looks very interesting although I most likely won't be able to find a bottle of VooDoo rum over here. And I like the look of that red sanding sugar rim!

I too really like Ran's Reverb Crash. It's easy to make and only contains easy to obtain ingredients.

Was served an Ankle Breaker for the first time yesterday (in a cool Sam Gambino Shrunken Head mug) and really enjoyed it. Originates from the Swamp Fox Room of the Francis Marion Hotel, Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1950s and the recipe can be found in Beachbum Berry's Intoxica book.

VooDoo rum is just spiced rum. When I tried it one time, I subbed Sailor Jerry I think. I bought the little airplane size bottles, because I knew I wouldn't be using spiced rum too often.
It's a good drink, but very sweet as I recall.

Yes, but spiced rum can be quite different from one brand to another and by substituting what the recipe calls for could make it a quite different drink. And looking at the recipe, it doesn't seem to be overly sweet, containing a total of 4 ounces of fresh citrus juices opposed to the 2 ounces of syrup.

T H E ✠ S U R F I T E S

Yeah, unfortunately VooDoo isn't available where I am either, so I had to sub. I tried to order one when I was out there at Forbidden Island last year, so I could see what the Voodoo Priestest was really supposed to taste like, but sadly it was just a limited time thing and they didn't make it anymore.
