Re: [SurfGuitar101] Digest Number 80

****Hey people. I am looking for a hanful of cool surf
> tunes to add to the song list. If you could only buy
> one cd, what would you go for ? I'm almost thinking

> Ventures
> albums. Thank you.****
The Ventures were not a Surf instrumental band, per
se. They were a Rock instrumental band from the
Pacific Northwest, who hit big in the late '50s, and
subsequently did a Surf exploitation LP in the '60s,
after the Surf craze hit big.
That said, you have to start off with a Dick Dale CD.
I wish SURFER'S CHOICE was reissued on CD. It is the
best Surf instrumental LP ever. Also, the Crossfires
were one of rawest and raunchiest Surf groups of the
early '60s. My favorite Post-Punk Surf compilation is
"Bikini World." Great from start to finish, with 33
minutes being entirely toooooooooo short.
****Hmmm, "The Gasser"? Is that by the Hondells, on
> their third album? (I'm
> at work now, can't check these things.)****
No, dude. "The Gasser" was never officially released
in 1965. It was in the movie "Ski Party." It was not
on any Hondells LP, as far as I know.
****If it is,
> I've been shown some
> evidence that Richie did not play on those tracks.
> But anyway, where is
> this track from, and who by?****
The Hondells. I asked my friend Domenic Priore
tonight, and he said that he remembered asking Gary
Usher himself, and Gary stipulated that it was Ritchie
who provided that killer driving guitar backing track.
I have Ritchie's phone number, so it may be high time
I use it and find out for sure.
Hang 10!

P.S. Please ignore the "Bubba Gump" moniker. I am not
right wing, nor do I care to be associated with
"Forrest Gump" the movie. My 21 year old brother
visited my wife and I in L.A. a year ago, and fucked
with my Yahoo info. I have tried changing it a
million times, but it always stays the same.

I was not aware of this track. So, it's not available anywhere but only
heard in the movie? I guess I better track down this movie! If you call
Richie, can you please let us know? I would love to conduct an interview
with him. Stephen McParland says that Richie doesn't mind talking with
people about the surf years...

That's most unfortunate....
