After reading some other posts (on other lists) about this compilation (Ace
Records, UK), I picked it up finally.
There is some really great stuff on here...all the tunes are from '63 or
'64. Includes all of Eddie & The Showmen singles. But I am really knocked
out by the Richie Allen (Richie Podolar) stuff. The liner notes are okay,
but I would like to know more about him. Does anyone have the two albums he
released under Richie Allen & The Pacific Surfers? Have these ever been
re-released? He was apparently a studio guy and did work for drummer Sandy
Nelson (Casbah) and Gary Usher & The Super Stocks. Voo Doo Juice and Quiet
Surf are really amazing songs!
Duh...always check with Phil Dirt first....
Thanks,
BN
PS Ivan, so this is where Space Race comes from? You guys left out the corny
vocal! Ha-ha (That must have been quite the gimmick back then...it makes
sense though...how else are you going to get people to remember the name of
your instrumental song? I also have the Revels Best of on Sundazed records,
and about every other song they do that trick too. :^)
PSS Its also interesting to hear the Mermen do both Casbah and Quiet Surf on
their "Live at the Haunted House" disc.

As far as I'm concerned, this is about the best (or one of the top two or
three) vintage surf comp ever made! It's FAN-TASTIC!

See my other email about this...

Yes, in fact, it did come from this comp! Our drummer wanted to put the
vocal intro in, but I just had to put my foot down! If I may dispense
with any appearance of humility for a moment, I really think our version
of the song is much better. We rearranged it, and added what I think is a
very cool ending. Anyway, i find it's better to take a mediocre song that
shows promise and work it up, than to cover a classic which you have no
chance matching!

Their Quiet Surf also mixes in some parts of another Podolor song, though
I can't remember exactly which one. I think it's Cave Man.
