I wouldn't classify that as a surf band having a top ten hit.
That was a rap/hip hop( whatever you wanna call it) song, that
was recorded over a surf song.
And not really surf at that, Middle Eastern song, done surf style.
Surf in the top ten ever again? no way!! As much as I'd like
to see it. It'll never happen, period. Radio just doesn't have a
clue or the right priorities to be that cool.
I think the closest thing to Instro music being in the
mainstream might be techno, or maybe ez listening, but those
are both far from the top 10 or surf.
And Yes HB, some of the surf guitarists we hear, see are amazing
musicians, it's sad that they don't get more exposure/credit/money
for what they do. The only thing I can say is what I always say.
Go out and see the bands while they are around. Even if it's a hour
or 2 drive.

I don't hold the opinion that having a certain type of
music or thing permeate the cultural landscape is
necessarily a bad thing. The problem is how many
manufactured copies, or "product" come out to cash in
on things like that. We've seen that happen with all
kinds of stuff. But if I could walk into a store or
turn on the radio and hear surf or another kind of
music that I like played all the time I'd be pretty
happy about it. I've worked in retail stores where I
had to hear the same Christina Agulera (whatever her
name is) song every hour on the hour...if you don't
like it to begin with, it gets old fast. If it gets
old pretty quick, then you never liked it. If it gets
old eventually then you never liked it that much
anyway. I can't say I'd get tired of pervasive surf
(or another genre I like) because I spend half my day
driving around listening to surf albums. The only
thing I ever want is more/different surf albums.

How about the Black Eyed Peas song Pump It? While not instrumental, it is still
Misirlou, though I don't know if it's reached top ten status yet.
