Outer Wave Plays Huntington Beach Pier

hbseacliff - 06 Feb 2006 17:46:37

A foggy and chilly dawn greeted us Sunday morning at the Huntington
Beach Pier. As thousands of runners and wheel chair athletes toed
the starting line for the annual Huntington Beach Marathon, Outer
Wave began to play at ground zero, the foot of the HB Pier at
Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street. The sound of surf music
drifted through the fog. The surf music vibes were so good that the
fog began to lift and in time the sun even made an appearance
warming the crowd that had gathered to watch Outer Wave.
Outer Wave is surf band this what was pretty good when I first saw
them about a year ago. In that year they have improved noticeably.
They play all the surf classics just the way you expect them to be
played and through vintage Fender equipment dripping with reverb.
Considering the early morning start, I didn't really expect much.
Was I was surprised. They were right on the money and in perfect
tune. Like the tide, the crowd ebbed and flowed. It was fun just
watching the reaction of the people when they first heard the music.
You would see the curious look, the faint smile start to grow, and
then their heads would start bobbing to the music. Pretty soon their
feet were tapping to the beat as the skateboarders on their six foot
long skateboards maneuvered through the area. Even the marathon
runners after completing 26 miles with the finish line in sight
seemed to feed off Outer Wave's energy. Outer Wave played for almost
4 hours. Few surf classics were unplayed.
As Outer Waver went into their final song, I headed for my car. The
music could easily be heard well down Main Street. As I passed the
statue of legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku I had to do a double take
as I thought I saw Duke, just for an instant, smiling and tapping
his foot to the music. Somehow, I think Duke approved.

Wow! That's a cool narrative. I had to work and miss the event, but this
review gave me quite a good description!

Thanks for the cool, nice words. We are so glad to be playing this
kind of music and it makes it even more meaningful when folks like
you share the same passion for surf as we do.

Tony,
Love the drum set. Looked like you were having a great time playing.
Was that a riot when all the little kids started dancing? It was like
the music just took them over. Thanks for keeping surf music alive.
