JM pickups in a Jagmaster

Paul Fritz (pablofleece) - 24 Jan 2006 18:21:22

Gang,
I recently purchased a Squier Jagmaster as a gigging backup to my Jaguar.
I¹d like to replace the stock humbuckers with some Seymour Duncan vintage
Jazzmaster pickups.
Has anyone here done this? Or put Jazzmaster pickups in any other guitar?
I noticed on Harmony Central that the first review of the RI JM is an entry
from Bruce Duncan (who is in a surf band in So Cal...hmmm) who did just
that. Check out:

Hey Paul.
I'd forgotten writing that review! However, I stand by what I said at the
time, that the 2001 (Made in CHINA) Squier Jagmaster with the mods shown below,
is one of the best Jazzmasters I've ever played. I used that guitar exclusively
for all recordings on both "Longboard Ranch" CD's. Up until recently, it was
also my exclusive gigging axe. Here's the quick list of mods/upgrades:
2 Seymour Duncan Vintage R/I Jazzmaster p'ups;
1 Fender 57 Strat R/I p'up in middle position
Custom made White Pearloid pickguard;
3 sliding on/off switches - one for each p'up
Generic Strat bridge/block upgraded with American Deluxe Series Strat
bridge/block;
Stock tuners replaced with Sperzel locking tuners
Pots/Switches/Jack replaced with CTS/Switchcraft U.S.-made equivalents
Stock nut replaced with Fender LSR Roller Nut.
Altogether, even with an excellent guitar tech doing the work, the cost
including the Jagmaster, came in under $650.00. That's awesome mileage for the
money, and even with all the other cool guitars I've been able to add to my
collection, this Jagmaster is a keeper for sure! As you might suppose, the
pickup/switching configuration allows me to switch from Strat to Jazzmaster
sounds without changing guitars!
There's only one Jazzmaster I've played that rivals my modded Jagmaster, and
that's the 1996 Ventures Commemorative Jazzmaster made in Japan. For some
reason, that Ventures model, for a stock, standard-equipped Jazzmaster, is the
sweetest J/M I've ever played. I don't use it for gigs, because it's a rare,
classic collectible.
For about $650.00 as modified, it makes a heckuva lot more sense to drag the
Jagmaster to gigs, especially since it makes all the sounds I want a guitar to
make!
However, I've found an even less expensive alternative, which scored major
positive comments from the other members of "Longboard Ranch", so for a surf
guitarist on a budget, I can also recommend an awesome, killer surf axe that can
be had for under $400.00!! I've already posted regarding this, so won't go into
the details again on this forum.

The Ventures Model Jazzmaster has an ash body. Is it the only Jazzmaster to be
made that way? What kinda wood makes up the body of the Jagmaster?

Hey Marty,
NO, the Jazzmaster was always available with Ash as an option, and I believe
in the early years, Ash was the wood used with the blonde and Sunburst finishes.
The Squier Jagmaster is advertised, and always has been, as using solid Alder
for the body.
Regards,

Hi,
Hmmm, not sure that Jagmaster's were always Alder. I remeber a brochure
of the early Vista series that these were Basswood rather then Alder or
Ash. And used to be having a Sonic Blue Vista Jagmaster arround, I can
asure you it was not Alder or Ash.
The Jagmaster was able to take many different PU's. I used it with both
Jaguar pick ups, strat pick ups and different Humbuckers. Jazzmaster
Pu's did not fit in the standard caveties.
I really loved the neck of the Jagmaster, superb in everyway. But the
trem was not my cup of tea. (main reason I sold it)
But in all, the best Jaguar alike guitar I ever played. Well, I don't
really miss it since I was able to buy a very nice Sonic Blue CIJ Jaguar
instead, which had an alder body and was of better overall quallity. And
nothing beats a "Pat Pend" tail piece.....
