I figured I better get to reviewing this before I forget too much.
If I forgot anything, and you were there please add to this.
First off, the event was held in a differnt venue than last year.
The Jolly Roger Inn just down the street fromthe Anaheim Convention
center, where the Namm show was being held at.
It was pretty good for the event, except the Parking was a bitch.
We had to park over a mile away and walk.
So Shortly after 5 pm The Shaddicts(Shadows tribute band) took the
stage, all in Dark horn rim glasses,and all goin' by the name Hank.
The Band featured Chris Barfield and Jeff Utterback from the Huntington
Cads on Guitar and Drums. Then Garret Imel(from the Ghastly Ones) on
Bass and Guitar on a few tunes. and Mel Bergman on Rhythm mostly, a few
lead tunes, and Bass on the Few that Garret played lead on. They did a
short set of about 30 min. of Shadows standards for the most part. I
was hoping for a Few Huntington Cads songs, I heard they might do. But
that didn't happen, as they had to keep the set short. For the last
song they Did Stingray, with Chris Barfield breaking out a Fender Bass
VI and goin thru a Fuzz pedal for the lead, And Deke Joined them and
played a Burns half size guitar and doubled the Lead lines 3 octaves
higher than the Bass VI. He also had on Black Glasses and went as Hank
Jr. for the small guitar he was using.
All the band played Burns guitars and Bass's thru VOX amps for
everything else. I wish I could give you a set list. But The only ones
I really knew were Appache, Theme for Young Lovers, and Stingray.Mostly
well know Shadows songs.
The Next 4 to 5 hours is all kinda a blur. And I'm really bad at
remembering peoples names. And I don't have the info of who played
infront of me. But needless to say it was all sorts of
Roots Rock, Rockabilly, Chicken Pickin', Joe Maphis style, and a
tribute to the Guy that played with Buck Owens. It was all very good,
and was amazing to watch close up. I was in the 2nd row. Oh there was
some guy playing a double neck slide with the pedals for bending notes.
Very very county, but extremely good. all of these sets were mixes of
Instros and vocals.
The one weird thing of the evening was Deke's pick of some metal
shredder of 80's band Nitro. Sorry I forgot his name too. But Deke has
seen him at the Namm show for the past few years and said he was blown
away by his playing. Which is weird, cause I thought Deke hated metal.
So this guy is known for playing double neck guitars. but not the side
by side kind of double necks. they go opposite ways, and he plays them
regular, backwards and just tapping with both hands on sepperate necks.
He played mostly with backing tracks( that were way too loud) thru 2
Marshall halfstacks. He did mention about 10 times he was influenced by
classical guys like Beethoven and Mozart( duh...)considering alot of
his scales are very classical orientated. But he did give a nod to
Rockabilly,rootsrock and surf/instro as beign big influences on him
when he was a kid, begining to play. In his last loooong medly of
weedley stuff and metal standards covers, he did throw in a bit of
Pipeline and Walk Don't Run, played tappiing style on opposite necks.
Nuff of that...
For the Finally the Los Straitjackets were introduced and Deke said
that They were supposed to have had Link at this show, but after his
passing away recently, That the LSJ's wanted to do a Link Tribute.
So they were in costume,and not without masks. And went thru
about 30 to 40 mins. of Link tunes. Such as Raw Hide,Slinky,Jack the
Ripper,Branded,The Shadow Knows(which I was diggin')(since most bands
don't play that one)and a few others. Deke came up and they all did
Run Chicken Run together. Then for the Finale, They hooked up 18
double neck guitars with 36 people playing them, to play "Rumble" for
the
"Double Neck Train Wreck". Supposedly, this was witnessed by somebody
from Guines book of records. To be put in as the most double necks
played at one time.
I mentioned to a friend,With all those amps goin' I wouldn't be
suprised if the power went out. Then about 30 seconds later, blammo
out it went. Just the power for the section of the building they were
all plugged into, not the whole place. That would have been bad.
Over all it was a great night,spectacular playing,and alot of Fun.
They raffled off 3 guitars for charity, Hello Kitty Strat/Gretch semi
hollowbody with Bigsby tremelo, and a Telecaster.
It was a bit long, but well worth the money (22 bucks),the walk, the
long show time( 5 to midnight).But a good crowd of 300 hunderd or so.
Deke said he was very happy with the show( best one yet) and the
Turnout.
Not to be too nit picky, but for next year I'd like to see a super
group of Oldtimers and new guys do a tribute to some killer obscure
surf songs, or a band like the Astronuats.

Just a few names to add to Jeff's review:
The Pedal Steel player was Dave "D.B." Berzansky.
The metal shredder was Michael "Angelo" Batio from the band Nitro(glad I had
my earplugs).
Mark Neill & The Unknowns (very good tone with Ric going into a small amp
going into a bigger one).
Bill Kirchen & Dave Biller in a tribute to Don Rich (Buck Owens' guitar
player).
Deke, of course, joined by the Dave part of the Dave & Deke combo.
Brian Lonbeck (Joe Maphis style super fast picking - one of the reasons I
came to the show besides Deke, The Shaddicts and LS) playing alone and with
Thom Bresh (thumb picker son of Merle Travis).
Los Straightjackets (Sugarballs on drums), later Joined by Deke. They were
pplaying DiPintos at first, then they changed to Danelectro Longhorns, with
Deke playing a white Supro with a black pickguard.
As everyone who attended said already, it was well worth it.
I like the roots and old country instrumentals, but the vocal country songs
were not my cup of tea. The shredder was amusing, but his songs were quite
similar.
(I was up from 4 am driving staright after work, then after the show driving
my way in stages down to San Diego).
