New topic to discuss... Favorite obscure cd's or just bands

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 01 Nov 2005 20:18:38

Instead of talking about the cd's everybody knows about, has...
why don't we do a list of favorite cds you have, that you don't
think other people know about, or never see anyone mention on the
yahoo groups.
I'm gonna do a real quick off the top of my head
60's
90's and 2000's
60's
Original Surfaris
Jim Messina and the Jesters
Surf Teens
The Centurions
The Crossfires
---------------------------------------------------------------------
90's (lots here, hard to remeber them all)
Death Valley- Que Pasta
Galxay Trio - "In the Hareum", or "Saucers Over Vegas"
The Hypnomen (all albums, but especially "Watussi 99")
Huevos Rancheros
Aqua Velvets
Johnny and the Shamen
Mark Broadie and the Beaver Patrol,or his other bands the Metalunas,
or the Sabatuers
The Goldentones
The Huntington Cads
King of Hawaii
and tons and tons more, we could break this down into a whole
seperat topic for just the 90's
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2000's gonna be hard here
Gein and the Graverobbers
The New Best of Insect Surfers with bonus rare tracks and videos
"Satelite Beach"
The Wangs
Way Out West
The Fabulous Planktones
Infrareds
etc. etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
these are all just from memory, if I looked at my collection, I
could come up with alot more.
Basically if you know of a good/or great cd, that never gets
discussed. tell people about it.
I got waaaaaay toooo many cd's, I need a radio show too.

What's your definition of obscure, Jeff? Your list is great, but
most of that stuff is pretty well known, at least by the hard-core
surf fans. But it's a real good start!
I find the Euro surf bands to be very different. Vibe for days!!!
Tremolo Beer Gut, Tubestone (covered here recently), the Treble
Spankers, Anacondas, Bradipos IV, Bambi Molesters, Bitch Boys,
Cosmonauti, and too many more that I don't immediately recall. To me
most of these are fairly well known, but to the casual surf fan,
they are undoubtedly pretty obscure.

I'll second the Saboteurs. Beaver Patrol is also excellent, and
totally different from Brodie's work with the Saboteurs. The
Anacondas are also killer. Tremolo Beer Gut is in my top 5 list. All
of their cds are on my MP3 player and get listened to repeatedly
throughout the week at work.
Also have to throw in the Fifty Foot Combo, Husky & the Sandmen, the
Apemen, and a dozen others.

Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.

Hey Kevin,
Former Nebraskan here (lived in Omaha most of my life) and a previous
customer of yours on Ebay. Where can I pick up the SumpPump Monkeys
cd(s)? I really dig the one tune I heard of them but couldn't find
anything for sale when I searched Google.

And for those new to surf... ask about one of these obscure or seldom
discussed bands/artists. Some are surf, some played some surf instros
at times, and some are pre-surf but relevant to the development of the
genre. Some are vintage bands, others are post 1980, and still others
are currently active.

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 02 Nov 2005 01:18:30

Great list, Phil! Plenty to chat from.
Some of the names are not too obscure, but just don't get enough praise,
like The Blue Hawaiians, whose CD productions like Sway have been
hallmarks.
One band, I hailed a few years back were The Atomic Teen Idols.
This was a group of young guys from Seattle I believe. They made the
trek to Atlanta for Surfari USA 97 and played and interesting blended
mix of Surf and Ska. Not that this hasn't been done before, but it makes
them an interesting obscure footnote for the history of Surf.

Jeff,
This thread gets my squeal of approval! <g>
Got you covered, and I'll raise you:
60's:
Al Casey (who wrote a bunch of hits for others)
Challengers
Impacts
Revels
Sentinels
Surf Teens
.......
and about two dozen compilations with both known
and unknown groups.
~!~!~!~!~!~!~
'90's and up:
Agent Orange (Living in Darkness - only partially surf)
Boss Martians
Tiesco Del Rey
El Caminos (Reverb Explosion!!!)
Fathoms (arguably the most reverb ever recorded)
Halibuts
Impala (Kings of the Strip - only partially surf)
Phantom Surfers
......
several "spy" music albums, and another dozen or so
compilations.
These are what I've not seen on this list since I
joined a few months ago. I've left off those groups
that I've got that have already been mentioned at
least once. And for certain, I need to find where
I hid that stash of mad money, as I've got an itch
for some new tunes! <lol>

Add these to the obscure list...they were all bands I was in VERY
BRIEFLY...I have some recordings on tape, but none of them released any
product. All performed live at least once in public...maybe you were there???
Stretch Riedle

Sea Monkeys
Saltwater Crocodiles

Bob your list is great too, and I was gonna mention some of them,
but most of your have been mentioned on here. I was going for
the bands that don't get mentioned. I hope most people have the
stuff I mentioned, as you say if they are hard core surf fans. But I
was just wondering what people had that most might not know about.
Basically pumping the group for new stuff to look for.

Hey Phil,

-That's news to me, Hey Brian you didn't tell us you were a
Convert.
LOL!!! ouch!!! it only hurts when I laugh.
Guess I should explain, I have some hairline fractures on my ribs
from a skateboarding accident from 3 weeks back.
Sneezing hurts like a bitch too.
