Sorry, I guess there's bound to be some exceptions, but when I think surf, I
think instrumental.
Didn't mean to start a war here. Just my opinion. I love metal. I love surf.
I just don't think the twain should meet.

There is instrumental surf and vocal surf. Beach Boys and Jan and Dean
are the most popular vocal surf bands. I find no reason not to call it
surf due to all the titles and lyrics about surfing. It is important
to distinguish between instrumental and vocal though. And why should
instrumental surf be more important than vocal surf. Instrumental surf
is about recreating the feel of surfing. I am sure vocal surf bands
have sang about the feel of surfing and why should that be any less
important.

Perhaps you've missed the great metal surf that's out there occasional
tracks from the likes of Anthrax, Herman ze German (Herman Rarebell,
Scorpions), Lawndale, Supersonicos, Surf Report, Franzlist, Elvis
Hitler, Bufalos d'Agua, Foundry to name a few...

Jacob, that's exactly how I see it. It's two different (although
closely related) styles that both are "surf music". To anyone still
in doubt, just think of great surf bands like the Surfaris,
Astronauts and Trashmen who all had surf instros and surf vocal
numbers on the same albums.

I fully agree that surf and metal shouldn't be combined in any way! ;-)

Phil:
Agent Orange cites "early-metal" as an influence on their
sound also...
Nice call on Lawndale, Phil...much of their stuff is heavy
and metallic!

Elvis Hitler. I haven't listened to them in forever.
Time to dig out an oldie...

I'd also recommend my favorite surf metal track "Death
of a Reventlo" from the The Reventlos' first CD.
