Jaguar problem...

Jelle (jastroboy123) - 20 Oct 2005 12:54:22

Hello,
I'm the lead guitar player from the surfband The Hawaiian Astro Boys
(BE).I play Fender Jaguar (USA reissue), Twin Reverb ('74), Tube
Reverb
(reissue), Ibanez Tube Screamer and once in a while I boost things up
with a Metal Zone. Now my problem is, and has been for a while now: my
neck pick-up fails sometimes, very weak signal. Technicians at my
local
guitarshop don't have a clue what the problem could be. The hardest
thing is that it happens just randomly, it can take months without any
problem at all and just like that it happens again! And I like to play
most of the time with both pick-ups switched on, otherwise some melody
parts can sound too sharp played just with the neck pick-up. I think
it's due to temperature oscillations??? That's the only 'pattern' I
can
get out of this 'behaviour'. We have a cold and damp rehearsal room...
Please can anyone help me with this problem (Dave Wronsky, are U out
there?) 'cause it pisses me off big time!

Jelle,
Neck pickup? Does the problem occur no matter which way the
Lead/Rhythm slide switch is positioned? If so, then clean
that switch. If that doesn't fix the problem, then replace
it. If the pickup cuts out only on the Lead circut, then
clean that slide switch - replace it if needed. In fact,
get in there and clean all your controls and switches.
It's good operating procedure. <g>
While you're 'under the hood', check for cold solder joints.
If they don't all shine uniformly, touch the suspected joints
with a hot iron. Not very common for this to happen, but
you might as well eliminate the possible problems before you
spend any real money. And again, it's good maintainance.
Damp conditions don't usually bother the electrical parts of
these instruments. (The finish, however, is another story.)
Could happen, but chances are pretty slim.
The last thing you'll consider touching/replacing is the pickup
itself. Even if it is a reissue, it's still hard to come by one
of these that sound as good as the original, at least not without
spending a lot of money.
Report back here with your results. <g>
