Tremolo Pedals

Bob Steingraber (bobsteingraber) - 01 Oct 2005 18:32:37

At the risk of asking something covered previously, does anyone out
there have any recommendations on tremolo pedals??? I'm leaning
towards either a Keeley modded Boss TR-2, or a Demeter TRM-1
Tremulator. I've heard a lot of good things about both of them. I'd
appreciate any input on these or any other tremolo pedals.
Thanks!

I use a Colorsound Tremolo. It's the purple one. It
can be hard to find because Colorsound is making very
limited quantities of their original pedals. I guess
when they find enough original NOS parts to make one,
they become available. If you can't find one of those,
the Full Supa-Trem is based on the Colorsound {acc. to
something I read}, and it offers a half-speed foot
switch which is nice to have.

hey Bob,
I just went through about seven looking for one myself.
I decided upon the Frantone Vibutron. sounds good & has a square
mode
for a more severe chop sound that I wanted.
I actually had a hard time chooosing between the Vibutron,
Fulltone Supa Trem & Guyatone Vintage Tremolo (VT-X.)they
all sounded good in different ways, took me like 3 days of
listening to decide.
The Fulltone deserves a look as it has a very seductive silky sound
but it also alters the tone and level a bit. the one I had rolled of
some highs & had a slight volume drop. it also did'nt get as severe
as the Frantone. John Fogerty is listed as using this pedal
The Guyatone is real good, just a touch noisy due to the built in
vacuum tube, also has a square mode.
The Demeter is notable leaving the guitar tone pretty much untouched.
nice pedal but limited sound options.

I have that Guyatone pedal and it's pretty cool. I does a nice
Fender-y tremolo and goes
way into a wacky, deep, chop sake, Huey gunship thing that is fun for
special effects and
has two outputs to pan with. It does add a little gain, but that can
be cured with a lower
gain tube or leave it stock and it can also be used as a clean boost.
No batteries/ adapter
only.

I use to use a boss tremolo pedal it was ok but... Now I use a voodoo
Labs It has the same type optical circit as a Fender amp. Sounds much
better. It kind of swells and throbs. very cool. and ta da it has a
volume.Wouldnt surf without it. Miller

The "Swamp Thang" pedal is the best I've heard. I
thought my Vodoo Labs pedal rocked until I plugged in
the the Swamp Thang......little hard to find out
retail but I have an e-mail address for the guy down
in Newnan Georgia, near here, who makes them

Bob, I was looking for something to help achieve a "Shadows" type of
echo and someone in the group suggested a Yamaha Magicstomp. It does
have a good tape delay and multihead effect. I was also impressed
with its tremolo, it has several and one that sounds just like the
one on my blackface Super Reverb. Also has some great reverb effects.
Might be wortha trial since you get a lot more effects in one box.

<hi Bob,
I like the cheap "Tuna Melt" from Danelectro a lot.
It sounds nice and vintage and doesn't cut any bass or treble (not that
I noticed)
The only downside is that the knobs are a bit small, but once you dialed
in the prefered speed and intensity, that's no longer a problem.
Housing is plastic, which feels a bit cheap, but so is the price of this
pedal. But I find the sound somewhat Fender-ish (when compared to my
amps Tremolo, but I usually use the first chanel, so no trem on those)
I use it in combination with a Jaguar/ or Jazzmaster, Danecho, Farfissa
reverb tank/or Fender RI tank (depending), and the Tuna Melt in either a
'64 Tremolux with a 2x12" Cab or a "66 Showman with a single 15" cab.
Ofcourse the Tuna Melt will perhaps sound different from the botique
stuff.

how's the loss of volume with the tuna-melt? I have an EH pulsar
which is nice qua sound and versatility, but it has the volume drop
just a tad to much, which annoys the hell out of me.
I by the way also have a George Dennis ping pong tremolo, which is
absolutly awesome, esp for the money. I think they're more expensive
in the States tho, coming from europe.

There is no volume loss with the Tuna Melt. On the contrary there is a
slight increase of volume when you engage it. Just enough to augment the
dramatic effect.

did you see the limited edition creature 'Swamp Thang'?
it was hand airbrushed to look like the creature from the black
lagoon. they came out real good. I picked one of those up recently
but it was just too subtle for me & the effect got weaker as the
rate was increased. other pedals I was tryin' the effect stayed
strong through the whole range. it did sound good at slower rates, I
just wanted the option of a strong trem sound even at faster rates.
did you notice if your 'Swamp Thang' does this? maybe theres an
issue with mine. Id actualy love to keep it because of it looks so
good.

Many thanks for all the recommendations on tremolo pedals!!! I
thought I had it narrowed down to two, but I see now that I have a
lot of homework to do. I may be demo'ing Tremolo pedals for months to
come. It's gonna be a whole lotta fun!!! I'll let you folks know what
I ultimately end up with.
