Re: [SurfGuitar101] Guitar arrangement of a swing jazz instrumental?

Dan Bartley (bigtwangguy) - 07 Apr 2005 19:28:48

It sounds to me like it would be classified as a ' 60s swing jazz instrumental
played a la surf guitar style song. However, if you throw some glissandos into
those horn lines and crank the tank....seriously Liz, I know where you're coming
from. I love playing the old standards and I love surf and want to combine the
two. I'm sure that as long as you add some twangy reverbed guitar surf
enthusists will dig it!
Cheers

There's a song, circa 1962, called "A Swingin' Safari" that was
composed by Bert Kaempfert, and performed by Bert Kaempfert and His
Orchestra. Over the past several years, since discovering his music
via a quest to find the afore mentioned song, and which I now have on
a CD of their 'That Happy Feeling' album, I've been noodling with
arranging the song for guitars and drums.
Could an arrangement, such as I've described, be considered a "surf
guitar instrumental," with all of the jazz band winds and horns
arranged to guitars, or would it simply be a '60s swing jazz
instrumental played a la surf guitar style? Once I'm able to begin
recording my original music, I plan to include this song on my first CD.
