Madeira Update (Indy Show 1/26)

Hello all;

The Madeira will be returning to the Melody Inn in Indianapolis on Friday, January 26th. We will be playing with three non-surf, hard-rocking bands: The Vacancy (Pittsburgh), Razorblade Skyline & Imperial Battlesnake (Chicago). This will be a great opportunity to expose some new people to the amazing, powerful sound of a full-on surf band pounding out that reverb!

Nothing scheduled for February at the moment, but looks like March and April will see us playing a bit more. More details once they're confirmed.

In other news: we have been hard at work on new material for a second full-length CD, which we hope to record in the late summer and release early in '08. Also, our Myspace site has been updated with two new tracks from the debut album 'SANDSTORM' as well as performance videos of the songs "Ricochet" and a new original, "Surf Fidelis." Go check 'em out!
The promotional "Live Track of the Week" giveaway has been going really well, and has gotten more people interested in us. This is the final week of the giveaway, so if you want to enter, visit our website at http://www.surfguitar101.com/TheMadeira, listen to our live track of the week (currently the Surf Coasters' Intruder), and then go comment on it at http://myspace.com/themadeira for your chance to win a copy of the 'RUINS' CD-EP!

So, to recap:

Friday, January 26th @ The Melody Inn
(3826 N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis)
THE MADEIRA w/The Vacancy (Pittsburgh),
Razorblade Skyline & Imperial Battlesnake (Chicago)
21+ 9 p.m.

Thanks and hope to see some of you there!

Good luck with the hard rock crowd, Ivan. Give us a report on how they liked it.

'The Vacancy'??? Man, that's an awful name. Who'd want to brave Indiana or Chicago winter weather to go out and see a band called 'the vacancy'. Now, Imperial Battlesnake...

For the three of you that MIGHT be interested! Smile

The show was GREAT! The Vacancy was a no-show. Imperial Battlesnake (an awesome name for a band!) from Chicago were like Stone Temple Pilots but without as much melody, fronted by a singer that seemed to like Iggy Pop quite a bit. Good musicians, especially the drummer - who actually signed up for our mailing
list! - but not my thing. Razorblade Skyline were amazing musicians, doing a kind of a progressive modern hard rock, very complex in parts with a nu-metal/emo sounding singer. They're a new, young band and I think they will have quite a bit of appeal to young folks out there. Both bands were SUPER loud, too, especially for such a small club. Imperial Battlesnake featured a FULL Marshall stack and a full Ampeg SVT for bass! Razorblade Skyline had Mesa Dual Rectifier (or something along those lines) with two cabs (2x12 and 4x12) on opposite sides of the stage, and a HUGE bass rig that was louder than God. And yet a few people said that we were even louder! I can't believe that, but if it's true, well, God bless good old Leo!! (Both Todd and I played our vintage Showmans and Patrick played his Twin.)

We played very well, and probably most importantly we were very relaxed and just had a really good time! My high-E string was somewhat defective and kept loosening up for the first third of the set (despite vigorous pre-show stretching) and Patrick broke a string half way through - but none of that phased us! I don't know why. It was just a load of fun! Maybe we've played enough shows by now that we're not uptight anymore. We also joked on stage quite a bit...

As a result of all this, I think, we went down REALLY well. We had a
bunch of people (including a bunch of girls, despite our volume!) tell us they thought we were the best band of the night. The other two bands all watched us, and were VERY complimentary afterwards, clearly not just saying it cause it was expected. So, I'd say it was a really good night. The turnout was a bit on a low side, which surprised the club owner, but he said we did great and that he'd love to have us play with non-surf bands again. I think this is the way to go at the moment, as we can spread the faith more effectively by doing this. We definitely did on Friday.

Finally, I met a BIG fan of ours from Indy - a middle-aged guy who is
friends with the California Guitar Trio. He bought FIVE Sandstorms on Friday (and the Cossacks CD and a couple of Ruins), three for the California Guitar Trio guys and two for each of his sons (he already has two copies for himself!)! So, it's pretty cool that CGT will be hearing our stuff.

Anyway, a fun night overall. And we played a balls-to-the-wall set -
the only slower song being The Secret Route. Everything else was fast and hard and LOUD. NOBODY left, they just ate it up, loved it. So much for all the debate we had about these things here a few weeks ago. The moral of the story: if you're playing with other rock bands and you don't suck, the high volume - or even lack of vocals - is NOT a handicap! God bless us and Amen!

Congratulations on the great gigs, Ivan! Wish I could've been there. One of these times I'm gonna surprise the hell out of you (and myself), and fly back for a show or two. Until then , keep pummelling 'em with the Showman!!!

Glad to hear that it went well, Ivan. Sorry I couldn't be there. I wanted to come, but I had to work that night and couldn't get out of it.

I KNOW THIS IS AN OLD POSTING BUT I FEEL IT IS RELEVANT IF ANYONE ELSE IS READING THIS. I HAVE PLAYED IN DENVER'S UNDERGROUND SCENE FOR WELL OVER 10 YEARS NOW AND PLAYING INSTRO SURF FOR AT LEAST 6 OF THEM. IF YOU (READER) FEAR HITTING THE STAGE WITH ANY TYPE OF HARDER OR SOFTER MUSIC THAN SURF, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. I FEEL IVAN IS TOTALLY CORRECT WHEN HE SAID THAT IT IS A GOOD WAY TO "SPREAD THE FAITH" SO TO SPEAK. SOO MANY TIMES HAVE I TAKEN THE STAGE AFTER SOME HUGE SETUPS AND SCREAMING VOCALS AND THE CROWD HAS JUST GOTTEN MORE PUMPED WHEN THEY HEAR THE WELL SCULPTED TONES OF A SURF MUSICIAN. IT REALLY IS UP TO US NOW TO KEEP SURF MUSIC GOING INTO THE FUTURE, AND THAT MEANS PLAYING ALL TYPES OF SHOWS AND IN ALL TYPES OF VENUES. SOME MAY NOT LIKE SURF MUSIC, BUT THE ONES THAT DO NEVER GO BACK THIS WEBSITE IS ATTRIBUTE TO THAT.

The Surf stomp I attend monthly in Minneapolis mn , Usually has a great mix of bands. From seriously hard rockin bands from Gary Indiana .from Chicago and Even New York. Aka the Coffin Daggers. I have even seen an unbeleivable (worlds most Satanic surf band) other than tacky they were pretty darn good. you have not heard surf till you have heard Ozzies "Crazy Train" with an organ for vocals/ Wierd but good. I truly believe that the greatest thing about any music is how it touches us and our audiences. Cheers Ivan .. and ps thanx for all your great music. Johnny Kahuna aka surfinjohnnyq
