The Aquasonics first CD is available!

I'm proud to announce that Colorado's favorite surf band, The Aquasonics, first cd is available! Packed full of classics that you know, and some you don't, it's sure to satisfy! A few cuts can be heard on our myspace page.

If you like your surf in a traditional style, this is the "must hear" cd this year! Recorded in the world famous Wormtone studios (a converted 1940's garage) the sounds are classic surf from start to finish!

The regular price is $12, but I'll do 'em for $10 (inc shipping in the US) to all my SG101 friends! It can be ordered by contacting Chris at chris@bigkahunabicycles.com

I got my copy of The Aquasonics Play Songs for the Surfin' Set' fresh out of the bandshell in Arvada!

This is a very traditional first effort - traditional in several senses - with only the contextually anomalous Spanish Blue (nice job, too) to hint at the band's split personality. Here they stick pretty religiously to traditional material or their own material in a traditional vein. Live they're happy to do Planet Seven's adaptation of Heart Full of Soul on their old school hardware. Live they naturally also take pleasure in the familiar standards. Here they lean toward the more obscure songs in their repertoire, with their usual careful attention to selection and range of genres. The material ranges from surfier riffing rock numbers (Down Shiftin', Movin', The Hearse, The Jester) through others (Cruel Sea, Mexico, My Favorite Martian, The Lonely Apache) that one might call "variety" material, a category beloved of instrumental bands generally. There's even a vocal - the Astronaut's hoary chestnut Kuk - to remind us that before Surf Correctness you could sing, too, if you wanted. They do Kuk and other vocal numbers live, too.

The Infantile Surf on Songs for the Surfin' Set is the Aquasonics' own. The name is a gibe from another band - in effect The Infantile Surf is an eponymous number. It may be my personal favorite on the disk, but it's hard to name a favorite when they've started out with a list of a few of my favorite songs.
