Permalink Nokie Edwards tone on Ventures Live In Japan '65

New Topic

I love this tone.
I always heard the ventures used Showmans, but this tone is kinda raunchy. Is he using some type of pedal? Really hot pickups on a Mosrite?

Any ideas?

I can't imagine that there were very many pedals available in '65, just guessin' here.

The DeArmond mercury switch tremolo pedal was available in the late 40s.
Lots of volume pedals available from the 50s onwards.
Chet Atkins was using a home-made wah pedal as early as '61.

I think that was probably the DeArmond 610 Volume/Tone pedal - works as a volume pedal moving up/down, and as a 'tone' pedal rotating left/right - like a tone knob on a guitar, giving a bit of a wah sound, but without active circuity. I have one of those from '58, so they were available at least since then. I'm pretty sure Chet used them quite early on.

Closest rig I've found by happenstance:
A real early 60's Mosrite and a Solidstate Yamaha G-100(-II) head and matching 4X12 cabinet... pretty darn close to the 65 'Live on Stage' sound.

what year solidstate yamaha G-100 (-II) are talking about,is that a new or a old amp

It's the black face/black grill cloth model from the 1980s.. you often see the smaller variants - G212, G210.. going on EBAY for a few hundred bucks. I can't speak for those in sound. But The G-100-II has a pretty sounding raunch to it.

...On their '66 and '67 Japanese live recordings (check out the "Live Again" and "On Stage - Encore" records, recorded on the '66 and '67 tours, respectively) they have wimpier tones (Fender amps?) and Nokie pulls out a Fuzzrite on a couple of songs...but the '65 "Live In Japan" sound is a Mosrite, bridge pickup, and a Guyatone amp, nothing else.

.

Nokie's tone on the "Live in Japan '65" CD is indeed purdy good but they don't sound as good on the original lp of the same recordings. The original live lp was called "All About the Ventures" and the tones were more similar to what we hear on the later live lps from Japan. For the CD, Ron Furmanek went to the multi-track tapes and did a nice job getting good tones and repositioning the drums in the mix. -Marty

"Hello Girls!"

Sounds to me like mosrite and a showman, on Telstar the bass player plays nokie's guitar and amp and that sounds to me like harmonic vibrato

I dont think its the guyatone

Just my $.02

There are 3 songs in this clip

the last is telstar

thats got to be harmonic vibrato in the verse

The showman grits up when turned up, esp with no verb.
