I'm the only 22 year old here who doesn't like bars.

surf music doesn't exist here. if it did, i'd probably be in a surf band just for kicks, and i'd be seeing surf shows.

If I advertized "Live Naked Hot Chicks" dance to a surf rock band, I'd have hundreds of people show-up, exceed firecode and get shut down. Who cares about the surf rock.

Too bad, we all know sex sells. Maybe I should try "Live Semi-Naked Chicks Doing Suggestive Dances" on stage, then maybe I'd have something.

Anyone know some "Live Semi-Naked Chicks" that do "Suggestive Dances" that will work and/or wear next to nothing for my next gig? I promise to play the best Miserlu you ever heard.

What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras?

I'm only a year older and I don't like bars.

The best way to support surf music, and to hopefully see it grow, is to go to live shows, period. If you like this music you should go see bands live.

Sorry you don't like bars but bands need people to show up at gigs and make it easier for this type music to get appreciated by a few more people. Tiki Jeff can't be the only guy out there trying to get the music more exposure.

In short....GO SEE A SURF SHOW, HODAD!

I'll go to a bar to see a surf band, but that doesn't happen very often out this way. Not all of us live in California.

...unfortunately, even the shows that feature "Go Go" or "Burlesque" dancers seem to not draw large crowds...

...but, as others have mentioned, perhaps being obscure has a positive side, too?

jeff, are you volunteering???? Smile

Carol,
Nobody wants to see that. Rolling Eyes
I'll be the 1st to admit, I'm outta shape. Embarassed

Hey jake,
just want to appologize for making my rude comments about you not liking to go out to bars. I shouldn't have said anything about it.

My bad,

My initial reaction to this thread was to post a smiley I know from another board, but I had to send it to Brian first...so:

Blah Blah

This comes up all the time, and we hear the same things again and again, Yet a lot of people seem to not use the good advice.
Like Ted says - promote.
Stop whining.
Like a lot of others said - mix line ups with other styles (well, you can say my band is guilty of playing with just surf bands all the time, but it wasn't my idea...).
Stop whining.
Write good songs.
Stop whining.
Understand that if you don't play some dancy tunes, you're not going to have a great following. Accept it as it is. I'm not saying that you need to write R&B instros, just don't expect a lot of women to dance to your music.
Stop whining.
Give a good audio visual experience.
Stop whining.
Understand that bands like LS and MoAM? got their following from touring a LOT (national tv exposure didn't hurt LS, either) - are you willing to commit to that? No? in that case:
Stop whining.

For my band, a lot of the advice wasn't taken, but we still get pretty good crowds. But then again, we're usually playing once every 2 or 3 months, and I don't think you ever saw me complaining about the fact that surf is not popular.

Just Stir the Pot a little bit (another new smiley).

Ran, who's whining? I thought this was a pretty decent discussion. Question

Jeff, thanks for the apology but it was not necessary. I didn't get offended by it.

Don't take offense, but the whole topic is a little whiny (IMO, of course). Especialy since the good advice that others give is mostly ignored. And that national popularity is out of our control.
And I was also Stir the Pot

It is hard to understand peoples reactions to surf music sometimes.

Years and years ago I saw The Ultras open for Dred Zeppelin in Chico, and they put on a killer show. This was a cool bar with a reasonably large dance floor, and through the whole set, the floor was empty except for one dude dancing around by himself.

Their set ends, and the house DJ starts playing some old 'disco' dance stuff, and the floor instantly fills with people.

I couldn't dance to save my life, but surf music is about the only stuff that would ever give me the urge to get on the floor and move around a little.

It was a college crowd, and the floor was empty? Didn't surf music pack tons of kids into gyms in SoCal in the early days, to dance?
