I'm looking to get a mic preamp to record onto my computer, so i'll need a preamp to match the line input. I've never really dealt with these before so I'm not quite sure what to look out for, or if they're generally the same. The quality doesn't have to be fantastic but im not looking for a cheapo. The two i've been looking at are a tube pre http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRSTUBEPRE this phantom http://www.zzounds.com/item--THKMIMAB0 and the tube MP http://www.zzounds.com/item--ART127 . Anyone have any tips or preamps they prefer? Thanks.

Here's a vote for the ART Tube MP*. I picked one up for $80 on eBay a year or so ago and use it all the time. It warms up vocal tracks nicely, does a surprisingly good job when you d.i. a Fender bass, and you can even push it and get usable distortion for your guitar tracks. It has a distinct character that IMHO works for any number of applications.
Like any other recording tool, you need to use your ears. The distorted guitar can get fizzy pretty quick and if you use the MP on too many tracks, your mix starts to sound plastic & "effect-y". But used judiciously, it can be a very efficient and cost effective tool.
Good luck, and let us know what you decide!
*Disclaimer: My recording experience is analog. I haven't made the jump to computerized recording.

I ended up using a tascam 122, i completely forgot about that thing's mic inputs, ive only used it direct from the guitar and the quality seemed terrible, so I packed it away. I gave it a try and it does the trick decently. It sounds a bit hollow, but I think I just need to mess around with it a little more. Since I wasn't planning on getting a higher end preamp, it doesn't make sense to pick something else up. I appreciate the help though.

I have that, too. The line-level should be fine for computers. I put a limiter between preamp and audiointerface, that catches high peaks and makes it faster to track. What I like about the art is itsâs got tubes. I change them even though the stock tubes were very good, but I put in a Telefunken on one channel and an east german with a Mullard-trype distortion on the other, that way I have two different flavors.
Each channel has two ins and two outs, itâs very handy two for different mikes and going out to to the mixer as well as the limiter on two lines.
I guess itâs nothing special, but a great workhorse, and affordable.

I use these crappies. not tsraight into the pc though, and they dont have dig outs.
wouldn't you want an a/d converter with a built in preamp?
the mic100 is simpler, sounds better (if you put a new tube in
) the mic2200 has 2 preamps and a very effective eq-section, with a parametric mids, invaluable. both are cheap which is why i have them.
