Permalink novice surf guitarists Vs surf bands battle

New Topic

Here's a mad hair brained suggestion which will never work!

Bands submit an mp3 track minus the the guitar part so novice players can record themselves playing along and send it back for SG101 judgement.

Points given for best and worst performances.

Professional players could also take part and battle the novices.

Could be amusing.

Thanks mom_surfing!

Just my opinion but 3rd wave surf music is still riding on the back of pulp fiction, if we want it to extend then we have to invest in the newcomers and youngsters. I'm a novice player and i'd love to play along to some of these surf tunes ..if i could find any. Any encouragement for the novice is good i'd say.

Martin Cilia is the lead player for The Atlantics and produced two solo CD's last year. They are Revenge Of The Surf Guitar (ROTSG for short) and the difference between the two is that one is the backing track only. I have both of them and they are a hoot to play along with.

http://cdbaby.com/cd/martincilia Full CD with lead

You can hear a lot of the tracks from the full CD on Martins myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/rotsg

Some of the songs are also in tab form on Martins web site as well:

For the parts he does where you can't seem to play them, well, that's where you get to improvise...:-)

I've never seen a surf musician/band produce a CD, a backing track of the CD, publish some of the tabs for the songs, and answer every email question I care to ask. He's the nicest and most outgoing/easy going surf guitarist I ever met.

Mel

thanks for that information mel

Mel. This was really expensive last time i looked.. almost reasonable at cdbaby. Guitarbackingtrack.com has a few surf oldies for free: http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/

Another cool thing is tuxguitar
http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/
download it, find some guitarpro or power tab surf guitar tab and then you can drop out whatever tracks you want, slow the tempo down or speed it up and play along.

Just my two cents worth, but I don't think this is true anymore. Nowadays I find that trying to explain surf music in terms of Pulp Fiction doesn't work like it once did because most people don't remember the soundtrack anymore. It's been almost 15 years since that movie came out.

Back to your original idea: that sounds like fun. I once came across a web site full of MIDI backing tracks for Shadows songs, which would be a quick and easy (though slightly cheezy) way of doing this.

I just added a "Backing Tracks" download category. norcalhodad graciously started this off with a track that is missing the lead guitar. Thanks norcalhodad!

dp, did you ever have an opportunity to look into this? I would be pretty excited to have access to something like that.
