So I should switch over to a NGD thread for the rest – I landed this sweet SGV 800 this evening. I had to pay a pretty price, $640 w/o case (just a gig bag) but the axe is pristine and even matches my Fender amp's aqua sparkle naugahyde!
I restrung it with GR nickel 10 rounds and warming up to it. SOund is not as distinctive as Mosrite or Jag, but setup is spot-on and the quality and cosmetics superb. I won't regret spending the rest of my insurance settlement on this axe!
What do the rest of you SGV players string yours with? I had to hit GC so of course selection was limited to stainless with only a couple nickel sets.

I play 12-16-18-32-42-52 rounds on my SGV300`s. It works but it needed its time for a good setup! And for this string gauges you have definitely put heavier springs into the trem unit backside. They are not easy to install.
But I will try 11-50 flats soon.

Ralf, there is a special tool for installing/deinstalling those floating vibrato springs, I saw it for sale online. There are so many of these units out there that the market is big enough for such.
Since it's a long-scale neck I'm thinking the next set will be either 10s or 11s flats but I don't want to put the tension of 12s on it.
The neck, frets and overall action is so good it doesn't take much getting used to. I just have to hear it through my big gun rig to feel what the pickups are about. They sounded kind of generic through my MusicMan combo last night, but it was late and I couldn't crank it up. I think with a guitar like this, the originality of visual appeal combined with the craftsmanship and quality of materials are enough to sell the guitar even if it has a nondescript voice. And this guitar is in A+ condition.
Someone point me to OHSC!

Yamaha sgv guitars are very nice axes. They play great and cut through the mix really well. Congrats! I play my sgv guitars with 10s. I think that that gauge is perfect for this guitar: easy to play, good sound and you almost do not have to change the guitar setup.
Have fun!

THanks for chiming in Narciso! Can I call you Narc for short? Oh, wait, that sounds off...
I think I'll go with flatwounds next time, I'm not digging the sound of these DR 'Pure Blues' – too sibilant with the AlNiCo single coil p'ups. this type of string is better suited for Gibson-type guitars. Live & learn.

So far I had 11-50 flats on my SGV 300. As Ralf mentioned, springs with higher tension are necessary with this choice, and this makes the trem much stiffer. The sound with flats is very balanced.
Next I'll test 11-50 nickel rounds in quest for Eleki/Takeshi Terauchi sound.
Your SGV 800 is a true beauty!

you know, here in Italy this is a very underrated guitar
I bought one some years ago, priced 190 euro (prezzo giusto !), I show it to my friends and EVERYBODY asked me: 'is it a toy ?'

Sheesh, Just buy it and bring it with you to someplace where they are appreciated. It could easily sell for triple.

Is it possible to buy an original pot knob somewhere in Europe?

That guitar is a long way away from an SGV.

It's looks similar to a 1980s Yamaha SC300T. I wonder how many other variants they produced.

That's an EGV103C. Good price, but I think they're made n PRC, not Kaohsiung, Taiwan. BIG DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY Still, it's half of what a yellow one just sold for on ebay (priced as though it was an SGV).
I have to say I am getting sick of ad copy that calls a guitar "rare" or worse "super rare". I guess anything is rare compared to a Strat or Tele.
That Barbie play guitar is so cute! If my girl was 6 I'd buy her one. My wife got her a "Paper Jams"guitar-shaped controller with cardboard amp that she played with maybe 5 times. I felt bad about how little I saw her using it – bad for the maker because my girl wasn't really connecting with it.

I can say for sure the very first Fender Japan guitars with serials JV between 1982 and 1984 totalled 36,000. JV Telecasters, Stratocasters, P-basses for home and export markets. Even so I could probably buy a couple of JV Stratocasters per week for the foreseeable future, they are sought after but not honestly rare.
The SGV were made between 2000 and 2007 so who knows how many were produced.
I think the truth is, JV Serial guitars only became sought after because someone made the effort to document it's history.

The SGV 800 makes another appearance on the Doctor Who TV Series this week.
And now it also features in the theme music.
I've already seen one eBay auction describing the SGV as a Doctor Who Guitar!

In a previous life I use to work for an online music store and we had one of these guitars and I was surprised how much fun these guitars are to play, and this is coming from a Fender guitar guy.

Wuh , it is good that Peter Capaldi didn't choose Jazzmaster or Jaguar as his guitar. . .
