New Topic

Surf Fest '06 took place on Saturday July 29 in Clarkston, Georgia (just outside Atlanta). There's another Topic on this board where some early, advance speculation about the event was posted, and where Spanky Twangler and I posted the first after-action reports, but I thought it would be a good idea to open a completely new Topic for pictures of the event.

I shot some digital pix and some on film. A selection of the digital images is below. (The film still hasn't been processed, as only half the roll was exposed that day.)

Here's the poster for the event, displayed along the roadside in Clarkston to show fans where to turn right for the event parking. That's scenic Clarkston, GA in the background there....

A longer shot of it....

After a very nice introduction by UNSTEADY FREDDIE in which he described how surf music wasn't actually killed off by The Beatles, the show opened with Randy Dukes playing a short instrumental acoustic set....
[image](http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5599/02randydukesap5.jpg)

Next up was Stratogeezer, another local Atlanta act, who played a set of covers with a heavy Ventures influence. (I loved their surf arrangement of the main theme from Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!) They swapped instruments around a lot, but many of the leads were played on the blue Wilson Brothers Ventures-Model seen here...

My favorite act of the day was El Capitan, who mixed up surf sounds with some killer original spaghetti western-style tunes and Link Wrayish instro thunder. That's my bud Jet Powers (blond guy with sunshades) up there playing rhythm, and famous rockabilly Johnny Knox on bass. The funny thing about this pic is you can see UNSTEADY FREDDIE at the left edge, wearinga surfboard shirt and shooting a photo....
[image](http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/6254/04elcapitanwithunsteadyfreddieut1.jpg)

You can also see Freddie in the background of this "atmosphere" shot, just to the right of the bright red cable hanging down.
[image](http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/9265/575180r105425aci9.jpg)

Here's El Capitan's guitarist, James, and their oh-so-youthful drummer, relaxing after the set....
[image](http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4835/09elcapitan2tg2.jpg)

Here's Jet Powers, hoisting his skull-mug fulla frothy brew....
[image](http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/5835/575180r104420atm6.jpg)

In addition to the surf bands, the event also featured a car show! These cool rods were on display in the parking lot across the street from the festival grounds....
[image](http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9393/05cars1fe3.jpg)

[image](http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/6013/06cars2bm1.jpg)

[image](http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/1550/06cars3ps2.jpg)

The mighty Penetrators were in good form that day, looking sharp and sounding sharp...

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/9078/08penetrators2bd9.jpg
http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/66/10penetrators3zm1.jpg

Finally, here's a dramatic shot of the colossal dark cloud of the storm front moving toward the fest grounds, which dropped a danged monsoon on The Surge's closing set and forced 'em inside.

I like the film camera because of its fast shutter speed. You press the button and it instantly snaps the photo. My digital camera drives me nuts because of the delay between pressing the button and the time it actually snnnnnnnnnaps the photo.

Also, unless I use a tripod, everything looks a little blurry (as seen above).

Thanks for posting the photos Gregory... I wish that I could have been there... It looked like a fun gig...
I can't wait to see El Capitan and The Ghastly Ones at Drive Invasion... less than a month away now...

I've posted a series of videos from Surf Fest in Clarkston at the link below. Apologies for the initial broken links Embarassed - but things seem to be working now. You'll need a high speed connection to view these:

thanks for posting, awesome, three quick notes
- Big Ray still has it, damn shame he doesn 't pklay more. damn shame he doesn't live in my backyard, actually.
- spanky's black jag looks even better on video, what a great machine! dig the moves too.
- what the F? they were still playing while it was raining, under that umbrella deluxe roof? what was this, deathwishfest?

okay,

I've been out of internet-commission for a while.

I got lost and missed Stratogeezer and El Capitan, which I'm sorry about.

Big Ray kills. That guy is a consummate showman. And those dudes had only practiced together TWICE before pulling that show. Muy impressive.

And I finally got to see The Penetrators. Whew. I thank them for making the trip. I'm also pretty convinced that Luger doesn't have a day job. He just sits at home making up crazy basslines.

Eddie's amp (the one I was using in the 2nd video) died. I'm afraid that trying to stick the rain out was not the best idea...

Rob, thanks SO MUCH for posting these! WOW! Shocked

I finally got the links to work and I was bowled over by the virtual reverb buffet you've served up here. I'm especially glad that the El Capitan song comes off so well, and that now everyone can see Johnny Knox's upside-down bass playing. Laughing

Dang, I just took another look at Rob's video of The Surge doing "Wipeout (Rain-out Version)" and nearly busted a gut laughing at the cascades of water pouring off the canopy, a deluge which very nearly douses poor Mitch's bass several times!

I assume the intermittent flashes which wash out the screen are lightning strikes....

Man oh man, what determination those Surgers showed!!

Thanks for fading out on our tune before the circuit breaker blew killing the big finish. It looks like the bass went out during the Big Ray song also. I don't believe they're used to pushing that much electricity.

Oh well,

Hey Spanky, thanks again for letting me use your head.

In the first video of Wipeout (god...I wonder how close we were to being electrocuted) you hear Eddie's amp go out first. After we packed it up and went inside that head never really came back to life, though Eddie says it's fine now. Spanky lent me his head for the remainder of the set.

Here's some additional photos taken at Surf Fest by my buddy Greg Pollard. Sorry that he didn't get a mix of the bands - as he had to depart after after StratoGeezer- so he missed all the great band action to follow.

Anyhoo - Greg did a good job of capturing some of the cool details of the venue and event in general. Here's some of them:

http://www.stratogeezer.com/surffestpictures.htm

Thanks for the link, Geezer! Very Happy

I'm hoping to add a bunch more pix myself, including one of the ominous stormcloud moving toward the event venue.

BTW, Did any of the bands get one of those cool color event signs, as a souvenir for their practice space wall?

Hey guys...I'll tell you what sucks....you live in the West Georgia area...your musically frustrated because you've no one to jam with...you love surf music...you assume there's no scene within an 8 hour drive because you're too busy to keep your ear to the ground and/or the free magazines with all the show listings are not distributed in your area...then you find out weeks later there was a ^&%$#!^%^&* surf fest a little more than an hour down the road!!! (pulling out hankie) I will now commence to playing sad, slow, sloppy and somber surf on my jag.

In all seriousness...is there a website out there that will tell me about the ATL/GA and/or the surrounding area's upcoming shows?

thanks! Keary

Umm....this one? Wink

We have members from the Penetrators, The Surge, Stratogeezer, and The Mariners/Hula Hounds...so hopefully if they know something they'll post.
