Anyone have suggestions for clubs to contact in the northern Florida area (Tallahassee, Ocala, Gainesville, etc)? Or, places in Georgia? We sometimes go to Atlanta to play Trader Vics, and are wondering what type of clubs are available in some of these towns on the way up there.
Also, any clubs in Asheville, NC that we should consider?
We do surf, swing, gypsy-jazz, Hawaiian, rockabilly...
Thanks!

Hey man, try The Star Bar in Atlanta.

Beyond that, you just kind of fish for what you can get in GA. There are some cool places, but none that I can think of besides Trader Vic's and Star Bar that are particularly friendly to this type of music.

The place in Tallahassee that The Haole Kats would go over the best is at a tiki bar called Waterworks... but they supposedly no longer book live bands there..
Other than that it's hit and miss as to what you will find club-wise... most clubs want the bands to play for free... which really sucks...
or they put 5 bands on the bill so you end up with maybe $50 at the end of the night...
I sometimes rent the American Legion Hall and have shows there... It's a great sounding room... built back in the 20's
You guys would sound great there...
If you would be interested in trying that let me know, and I will look into what dates are available...
Other options are...
The Club DownUnder at FSU... If you sent them one of your cd's they might consider you for a show... you should be able to find them by doing a web search...
They do something here called the Downtown Getdown before every FSU home football game... They block off a large portion of downtown Tallahassee and have bands play... while people eat corndogs... elephant ears... etc... just a big pep rally... I'm not sure who to contact... but that's another idea...
Then there's the Springtime Tallahassee festival (in the spring)... and The Festival of Lights (in the winter)... sorta the same idea as the getdown but targeting a season instead of a football team...
OK... hope this helps...

The Star Bar USED to be the place to play in Atlanta, and it's still OK, but under new ownership, it's not the place to play it once was. Atlanta's become a tough town for surf, and live music in general (like a lot of places) and most surf-centric shows these days tend to be special events that are not necessarily locale oriented (e.g. Clarkston Surf Fest).
Probably the best bet for now is The EARL in East Atlanta www.badearl.com--tell e'm you'd be great with a garage band. Another bet might be the newly re-located Lenny's (I don't know the website).
A good bet for yer first time to town is to maybe work something out with either The Surge (paiginig Eddie Katcher) or The Penetrators (Paiging Spanky Twangler)--although those Syndicate boys ain't formally an ATL band. When El Capitan gets it's act together a little further down the line (new bass player needed), maybe we'll be able to help, too.
