Okay. You can get a used Japanese Jag or Jazz within $50 to $100 of that when you watch and wait.
I happen to have four Fuji Gen Gekko guitars, so believe me when I say I love the CIJ/MIJ quality. Having checked out the Mex Jag and JM (both mine are MIJ!) the ones I played were very nice and I would not reject MIM guitars if I was looking for budget Fender. I do like the idea of the Jagmaster. I was just saying...half a grand? Way to drive the market up, Ebayers!

I think you're just seeing the prices steadily climb and I think that the CIJ JM's and Jags are going along with it. I have not seen a Japanese Jag or JM go for less than the $700's in a long time. There are always flukes, of course.
I think a Vista series Jagmaster is a great deal on a Japanese Fender if you like them for what they are. $500 is on the high side and I don't think they're quite there yet, but you have to be lucky or have a friend to get a Jag or JM for that. I paid $275 for mine like new...and I just realized that was in 2003. Wow.

I have seen those asking prices that high as well, but what they actually sell for that I have seen here on C-list Los Angeles and on Ebay is far less. I thought about buying another MIJ Jag and taking whatever was better than mine and combining the two and selling of the leftover guitar-keeping a near flawless one, so I have been looking for a few weeks. Anyway, two weeks ago a MIJ candy apple red with matching headstock:$550, this week a MIJ shell pink on Ebay: $675. Currently a C-list MIJ Jazzmaster in white with tort guard is up for $650 with case and he says he can move a bit on price. Not saying this to prove you wrong. They are listed way up there as well, but I am saying look_ every day_ and you can still get a respectable deal.

I'm in love with my Jagmaster !!!
I just removed the original black pickguard & humbuckers (HUMBUCKERS DON'T SURF) and got a new tortoise pickguard with cheap singlecoils
I arranged the single coils in a "mustang" shape and I'm quite satisfied
Take a look, a beauty isn't it ?
That looks great!!! Where did you get the pickguard?
I just picked up a Silver Sparkle w/humbuckers off Craigs list for 100 bucks that still had the clear plastic on the black PG.
Love the neck on it.
I just need to figure out what pickups to put in it.... any one have any idea's?

That does look good. So garish it is fantastic! I like the pick up angle. Go all the way and get a white toggle knob!
Can you show a photo of under the guard- the routing, etc?

Very Nice Jagmaster with this beautifull tortoise pickguard ! Bravo !
The best deals, I have seen on ebay for months are in Uk.
MIJ/CIJ Jazz around 400£ and jags a little less.
This Squier super-sonic vista is a good exemple:

I don't know the final price but I ask the seller and he agreed to ship overseas... I don't have money to spend right now but it is a rare and nice guitar.

hehe !!
I shot the pic some months ago ... now the toggle is white, in tune with the knobs
I bought this guitar on ebay two years ago, 160 euros only ... plus 30 euros for cheap mexican squier stratocaster, and 50 euros for the handmade tortoise pickguard
I love the neck, love the sound and the silver-sparkle paint looks very good !!!
The wiring is quite simple, I just replaced 250K pots instead of the 500K stock pots, but the wiring is absolutely the same
This is the best "budget surf guitar" IMHO

good point. Although, The Jagmaster is A different beast than the Jags/Jazzmasters. The humbuckers make it more of A rock guitar ala kurt.
Perhaps these are the folks buying em, not the surfers. Also, the "Vista" name brings instant "ahhhhs" to buyers these days.

The original Vista series was definitely of the same quality as the MIJ/CIJ guitars at the time. The much later Jagmaster with the standard scale from China or Indonesia is a pale comparison. I have a Squier Super-Sonic. Nice guitar but the neck is too narrow (A-width) and thin.

just purchased a new jagmaster, made in china with the 24 inch scale, don't know what the fretboard radius is. the humbuckers will get replaced, a bit muddy sounding and i'm wondering about a new pickguard. the axe is the black one with a parchment 'guard.
i'll have to find some single-coils for it, 'buckers don't surf.
you guys gave me a case of GAS, so i'm buying new (but cheap) stuff to get a more surf sound. my blues and semi-metal rigs just don't really surf.

"zzero" You too? I found the stock pups of my recent Jagmaster muddy as well. Since I had wrist surgery on my left hand on Friday it'll be a few weeks until I get the Kent Armstrong P90 Retro-Fit humbuckers installed when I do I'll post here to let al know what I think of them.
In the mean time check out my surf guitar Strat project with GFS Surf 90's

the stock jagsmaster pups were muddy to my ear. i just put WD tuners on it and i'm gonna try lowering the pups and raising the adjustable pole pieces closer to the strings to see if i can clear the sound up a bit. if that doesn't work, well that's a whole different can of worms!

If you're handy, rip out those pickups and put some Jazzmasters in there. You'll have to modify the pickguard and enlarge the cavities - but it's worth it!

Alright Danny. I've been wondering if someone did this. Is it yours or a shot of someone's you know? What about the sound? Pretty close to a JM or does the different wood and bridge change it quite a bit?

That is mine indeed, though I'm hardly the first to perform this surgery. As you'd imagine, it sounds somewhere in between a strat and a jazzmaster, though closer to Jazzmaster. It's a great sounding guitar for the $400 bucks or so I've got in it. (labor not included)

Danny.. that looks awesome. Was that a re-paint or was that finish offered at the time of the Vista series? I have been considering Jaguar/Jazzmasterizing my Fender Jag-Stang actually. Had it since 1996 and never really play it.. maybe with some single coil pickups it may be more enticing. Looks good though man!

For those of us that go back to the Yahoo Group days, you'll likely remember Bruce Duncan's elaborate and detailed posts about modding a Jagmaster. ;)

That was an original stock color. The finish is so thick on that thing you'd think they dipped it

danny,, thanks for the picture there! good idea going with jm pups. i can't afford a "real" jazzmaster so i may do mine like you did yours. mine is black, i like your surf green better. the paint is rather thick.
