I cannot think of a better way to start the Summer of 2008 but with 7-band all-instro surf extravaganza on SUNDAY MAY 25th over the MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND (the 'unofficial start of the Summer' around these parts) -- and do it at the home of NEW YORK CITY's 'SURF SCENE', 'OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD' at 538 East 14 Street, right? This all grew out from an e-mail from my good buddy VIKTOR of NYC's band, THE COFFIN DAGGERS, wherein he approached me to try and put something together for a band that was planning to do a visit to NYC on May 25th -- none other than, THE MADEIRA!! Oh yeah!! I approached New York's premier promter of independent music, MR. FRANK WOOD. Frank does a weekly show at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD he calls 'Wind Down Sunday', which kicks off at 6 pm, where he normally showcases bands (1/2 hour + sets); the evening then always ends with 'Sofa King' Wilde Jam (he insists on spelling it like Oscar Wilde!). So I approached him the day after Viktor wrote to me, and said, why don't we put our alleged talents together, {"UNSTEADY/WOOD"}, and put on a kick-ass 7 all-instro band evening, starting at 6 pm? Hence, the resulting UNSTEADY FREDDIE'S "SURFIN' SUMMER KICK-OFF" was born.
So folks from out of town ... now you have the perfect, most valid reason to visit NYC over the Memorial Day weekend!!

Something I failed to mentioned in my original post earlier today:
there is NO COVER at Otto's Shrunken Head -- NONE, EVER.....
hope to see some of the surf music community come out for this cool event

Sweet poster there Unsteady!
Big thanks to you & Mr. F. Wood for putting this whole mess o' surf together. This is an event that is a must and because of that I have a logistical question...being a local, you may be able to answer it best:
If one wanted to stay over night because one had too Pang's Punch(s), where could one find reasonable accommodations? I was thinking of Brooklyn...

Brooklyn is cool, as is Queens; but keep in mind, thhis show breaks around 1 am, followed by Frank Wood's "Sofa King" Wilde Jam. Although I have no problem on the subway at any hour, 24/7, others visiting from out of town might. But it's easy to grab a cab leaving Otto's.
I like www.travelzoo.com -- sign up for their weekly Top 20. Also, I recommend the Kayak site, specifically, http://www.kayak.com/hotels.
Hope that helps?

All of us in the Madeira are very excited to be a part of this, and to finally play New York! Can't wait to meet all the surf music fans and bands there - looks like quite a scene! Thanks to Freddie for putting all this together, too!
(Hopefully we'll be getting some good news about a couple of others shows around that date - stay tuned.)
Can't wait for the summer to kick off - we just got a few inches of snow in Michigan and it's really cold - the summer seems far, far away. But this show will be here before we know it!

I am overwhelmed you guys are coming thru!
We are honored to have you grace our NYC surf scene.
Taking the liberty of reposting something from my Twang Shebang Yahoo Group by David B. who attends practically every surf show in the area (as I do)
U will luv this,
Freddie this may just be the most awe-inspiring event yet of the
many awe-inspiring events you have put together!
For those not aware, The Madeira is the band of guitarist Ivan
Pongracic, formerly of the legendary Space Cossacks!
Ivan....nice, huh?
the East Coasters are psyched, dude
Later, and thanks!

We always stay in Jersey, it's cheap(er) and we can make a clean getaway in the AM!

Been Looking forward to this one all year! Anyone who can make it to this show is crazy to miss out! If the regular Shindig's are anything to go by, this one promises to be a blast!
