A longer scale length does bring something to the table, though.

Even with the baritone I already have, with its 27" scale length, everything just sounds deeper, even if I'm not dipping into its lower range.

I tune it B-B so the second string is E but it certainly doesn't sound like the E string on a regular guitar. I think it's that there are more subharmonics present or something like that. It has a real richness owed to the increased string length.

Hmmm. I tried a capo on my Bass VI once with mixed results. But it may work better after I put the Staytrem bridge on it. I'll let you know. Thanks!

I’d be interested to see how it sounds. The more I think about it, the less I think it will sound like a baritone. The string gauges are different than a bass six, and the capo’ed scale length would be different. I suspect it’ll sound like a capo’ed bass six without the baritone twang.

I gave it a little test run this morning. I expected some intonation issues, and there are. But the capo is way up the fretboard, going from Eb or E up to B. Produces a very creamy, jazzy sound. Nice, but definitely not why I want a Baritone for Spaghetti. Definitely worth trying.

A question about the Squier Bass VI. Does anyone have one of the new ones with the Indian Laurel fretboard?

They're not in stock when you try and put it in the cart.

Hadn't seen that before. Thanks for looking!

On the other hand, I'm no closer to knowing which of my short list guitars to choose, but I'm gonna need one before the end of July, or August at the very latest.

This one's in Atlanta. Must resist!

Hi Mike, When's the last time you treated yourself to something special? That Black Eastwood Sidejack is lovely. You work hard. It's in Atlanta. That's a sign that you deserve it.

(I expect the same type of commonsense advice the next time I wax wistful about a piece of gear. It's what friends do.)

Damn enablers! Work contract expires next month. I'm staying away from any purchases ATM.

Resistance is futile! But this model wasn't on my short list. What makes it a better baritone for spaghetti than the Senn, Gretsch, or Bass VI set up B - B, or even Dano?

Here's fuel for the fire.

This is my conversion project underway. I was previously undecided on a body; I knew I wanted a 2-point vibrato but I was thinking about making one myself. I found this Squier Standard on craiglist for a hundred bucks, though, so I jumped on it. The neck is great and I really like the pickups so they'll go to another project.

The neck is a 28-5/8" scale Warmoth conversion. Duncan Designed single coils and a SD TB-14 in the bridge which I will put on a split switch.

I hope this turns out great for you.

The Dano is out because I need a vibrato bar. The Eastwood Senn is out because it's beyond my budget. I had to draw the financial line somewhere, and that also eliminates the Eastwood Sidejack. I've decided against a parts guitar. So I'm down to the Gretsch Baritone and a Squier Bass VI with baritone strings. I'll have decided which one by the end of this weekend.

Gretsch Baritone!

Having a few guitars set up as baritones with 30 ish scale length, I have a feeling that you would be better satisfied with a 28 ish scale length. I am basing this around my experience with comparing the harmonic content to my 25.5 JM tuned down a step. The 30" scale length has much more of the fundamental note which leaves the overall tome a bit lacking for my taste.
Also historic examples - Jet Harris recorded "Diamonds" on a detuned Jaguar. Compare that to the tone of the Bass VI in " The Man with the Golden Arm".

YMMV
Good luck,
Ran
