I already saw that, Doug, but thanks for the heads up! (This should be moved to the Shallow End, probably.) I'm off to see Blackmore's Night in 11 days. I will not be wearing tights. If we're lucky, Ritchie won't either, but I suspect he will. However, if we're lucky, Candace will be wearing tights - but I suspect she won't. Damn. Ivan —Ivan |

Our band plays LAZY by Deep Purple in our second set. I'm not so sure that we surfed it up as much as we hoped but moreso turned it in to an all instrumental thang. Nonetheless, it's a real crowd pleaser and it get's alot of women up on the dance floor. — |

Are you sure about that date Carol? I saw them open for Cream in 1969 and I thought it was their first USA tour. Anyway they sounded a lot better than the video from Heffner's party. |

I saw Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio out front in 78, I think , That time is kind of a blur now. Blackmore smashed his Strat and I got a piece of his cord. Thats right ..we bad..! |

The instro is called "And the Address"........I've been playing around with that one for almost 40 years. It makes a great surf tune and I've pitched it to both the X-Rays and the Surge! Pick up the tempo and it smokes.......ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

Rainbow with Dio is some of my favorite music ever. I'm so impressed and jealous you were able to see them. For whatever it's worth, I saw Deep Purple in '87 from the front row, right in front of Ritchie. He smashed up a Strat in front of me, too. I still have some wood chips and a screw or two from that guitar. Stargazer!!! Ivan |

Just to bring this full circle (as far as Ritchie's career goes, anyway), here's Ritchie on TV again showing somebody entirely less cool how to play the guitar - in this case the funny Englishman Richard Quest is shown how to play the Smoke on the Water riff, from a recent CNN special. Lots of interesting stuff, talking about the origin of the riff (Beethoven!), etc. Pretty funny, too. (click on the final of six segments of this 1-hour show called Quest for Rock'n'Roll, the one called Smoke on the Water, located below the video screen. There's also a very cool segment interviewing Les Paul.) Ivan —Ivan |

I met Blackmore in 88' eating at Denny's in Fishkill NY. My younger son was a little over a year old and when we walked in the door my son took off toward the counter. When I reached down to pick him up I heard two Brits speaking in their native tongues and when I looked up I saw Blackmore sitting there. I have his autograph on an envelope I grabbed from out of my glove box. He told me Purple were in Poughkeepsie renting out The Chance Theatre for rehearsals. —http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Octomen/268386424192 http://www.myspace.com/theoctomen](http://www.myspace.com/theoctomen) |

Thanks for the link, Ritchie was my guitar hero when I was 18. DP was the stuff we listened to on the way to the beach, thats why surfgitar posted about Lazy. Its our nod to Ritchie, to bad, surfgitar blows him away now. — |

it could have been '69, i'm sure it was the winter of 68/69, but come to think of it, it could have been early 1969. i remember it being cold outside and this was in central florida. — |

I like Ritchie a lot, but the mustache and funny witches hat are a bit much.... ;) I've heard some of the Blackmore's Night stuff, and the instro's are pretty good, but I'm not too sure about the vocals. Let us know what you think of the show Ivan! It should be a very interesting experience. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

+1 on that. Rainbow Rising is one of the greatest hard rock records ever, bar none IMHO. The drum intro to Stargazer is absolutely brilliant. Gets me going like the Rocky theme song —Ryan |
