The Dirty Licks - Revancha Surfista CD (Self-Released)
You may not think of Tucson, Arizona as a hotbed for surf music but the southwestern-flavored sounds of The Dirty Licks will soon change your mind. In an arid desert that is home to quail and cacti, this quartet’s sophomore album, Revancha Surfista, or Surfer’s Revenge is a refreshing relief.
The Dirty Licks take a more eclectic approach than their previous two releases incorporating rock n’ roll influences with more progressive measures. Do I detect some ska in there? “Shallow Haunts” even offers some sexy saxophone. Stylistically, there is a healthy musical variety to be heard, and as a whole, the album is cohesive. In its 38-minute runtime, you won’t get the sense that you are listening to the same track over and over. This uniqueness holds up within each tune and from song to song. For surf enthusiasts, “Hot Tube Time Machine,” “Ojo Del Tiburon” (Shark Eye), and “Olas Furiosas” (Raging Waves) are real humdingers! The unrelenting tempo of “Olas” is complimented by the musicians’ deft ability to play together. The dual guitars play off each other nicely in the humorously named, “Spazz-Gasm” which also displays the band’s punk background.
The Licks maintain their tradition of crafting some of the most creative and comical song titles like, “Mommy’s Little Lobster,” “Merman Hellville,” “Prawn Date,” “The Courtship of General Zod's Chicken,” and “Malibu Barbie-Q.” I could imagine the laughter as they came up with these names.
If you like your instrumental music cleverly crafted and played with power, don’t sleep on this one! The CDs were produced in limited numbers and reside in a cardboard sleeve. Both physical media and digital downloads are available at Dirty Licks Bandcamp
