Permalink That whistling/tweeting sound from Apache and Diamondhead...

Do you know what I'm talking about? From the beginning of the various versions of Apache and all throughout versions of Diamondhead?

What is that? It's gotta be a trick involving reverb...

I couldn't think of a better place to ask!

Agent,
Having seen videos of the Ventures, it's Nokie Edwards just wiping the strings with his hand on Apache; with a pick on Diamond Head. It's a bit more pronounced with reverb.
I've copied it; it does work.
Hope this helps
J Mo'

Ahh, it must be the hand I'm hearing. I tried my pick and it was too intense!

Here's the "secret".

He's almost scratching like a DJ in that clip!

It’s funny, but in all the years I’ve played guitar, it has never occurred to me to use my nails like that. I’ve done it using a pick, but never just my nails. When I scratch the strings like that, with a pick, my Siamese cat will try to push my right hand away from the guitar. She frequently watches when I play, and has figured out that the sound is produced by my right hand.

Very fun tip. Thanks Gellert.
