Permalink Anybody heard of Peter Posa?

My wife recently went to New Zealand and spent several weeks travelling there. She wanted to bring me back some NZ surf, so she stopped at a record store and inquired within. The clerk recommended a double CD to her: "Golden Guitar: The Peter Posa Anthology."

There's not much info floating around about him, but I found a few articles from NZ sources (such as https://nzmusician.co.nz/features/peter-posa-picking-through/). He passed away in 2019.

His music has a lot in common with surf - tones, tasteful use of the whammy and occasional heavy drip reverb - but I'm not sure I'd call it true surf. He reminds me a lot of the Ventures, but even Les Paul in a lot of ways. He definitely has a sound, but I'd call him more a wide-ranging instrumental guitarist than a straight surf artist. No matter what, his music is a lot of fun to listen to and I'm really enjoying this compilation my wife found.

One thing I found interesting is his best-selling single, a song called "White Rabbit" (which is not a cover of the Jefferson Airplane song of the same title), is not included on this career-spanning compilation.

After listening to Posa, I just wondered if anybody else had ever heard of him.

Here's a video of three of his songs: White Rabbit, Wheels and Wabash Cannonball. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdCXZEhgiBw&pp=ygUXcGV0ZXIgcG9zYSB3aGl0ZSByYWJiaXQ%3D

Surely more inspired by the Shadows than Surf.
and I’d say even some Roy Clark also.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

A little Van Halen at the beginning of the video during the first song.

I love that surf is one of the genres where having glasses on while playing guitar is considered cool...

Definitely ‘60s Instrumental Guitar, but not down the centerline of Surf, although I’m sure he could handle Surf with aplomb. I caught another video of him, which was certainly likable. He’s a good player and puts on a good show.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Worked at his alma mata high school

I saw some more of his playing on YouTube, in particular in Vanuatu. I heard more than a little bit of Chet Atkins influence in his playing.

Spot of history here.

Lucky for me, that's for sure! Smile
